Woolworths warns: recall due to harmful lead in dishes!
In the last few days, the discounter Woolworth has started the recall campaign for several tableware items from the First Bloom series. The reason? An alarmingly elevated level of lead has been found in these products, such as chip reported. This could mean customers' health is at risk, so the company is asking all shoppers to return their affected items to Woolworths stores immediately.
The recall affects a total of six products from the First Bloom series. This includes:
- Suppenteller First Bloom, 21 cm (Produktnummer: 2000011859305)
- Servierplatte First Bloom, 30 cm (Produktnummer: 2000011859947)
- Dessertteller First Bloom, 20 cm (Produktnummer: 2000011857967)
- Schale First Bloom, 19 cm (Produktnummer: 2000011859817)
- Schale First Bloom, 13 cm (Produktnummer: 2000012459788)
- Speiseteller First Bloom, 25 cm (Produktnummer: 2000011858520)
These items were sold at prices between 1.50 and 4.00 euros. Customers who have purchased one of these products should under no circumstances continue cooking or eating with it, as lead can accumulate in the body and lead to chronic poisoning. Symptoms of lead poisoning include headaches, fatigue and weight loss, the consumer advice center made clear in an article. Products can be returned to all Woolworths stores and the full purchase price will be refunded.
Heavy metal contamination in food
Heavy metals are a serious problem that can occur not only in dishes but also in food. According to the information from the Consumer advice center Maximum values for heavy metals in dietary supplements have been in effect in the EU since 2009. These values are clearly defined: for lead a maximum of 1.0 mg/kg, for mercury 0.1 mg/kg and for cadmium also 1.0 mg/kg. Products with higher levels of contamination must be removed from the market and manufacturers are responsible for adhering to these standards.
Ayurvedic dietary supplements in particular face the challenge of containing problematic heavy metals such as lead and mercury. Studies have shown that many of these products are heavily contaminated, leading to worrying levels - an example from the USA shows that 40% of Ayurvedic NEM consumers have elevated levels of lead in their blood. This is a slap in the face to your health.
The effects of heavy metals
The health risks of heavy metals should not be underestimated. The EFSA recently published information on exposure to inorganic arsenic, which is also considered dangerous. The dose-dependent intake of chromium (III) is harmless, while high concentrations of chromium (VI) can even cause cancer. This particularly affects sensitive groups such as small children and pregnant women.
Consumers should always be careful and seek medical advice if they experience symptoms such as nausea or physical weakness. Particularly when using Ayurvedic products, a pediatrician consultation is strongly recommended before taking them.
