Increasing cases of child endangerment in Saxony-Anhalt: Insight into acute and latent threats as well as current statistics.

The number of child welfare threats in Saxony-Anhalt has risen rapidly!
In recent years, the number of child endangerment proceedings in Germany has increased noticeably. As early as 2023, the youth welfare offices nationwide documented over37,000 casesacute and latent threats, with neglect standing out as the most common form. Psychological abuse was identified in around 23,200 cases. These alarming figures highlight the challenges facing society and social institutions.
The definition of acute endangerment of the child's well-being is clear: there is significant damage to the physical, mental or emotional well-being of a child or young person that cannot be averted. In the case of latent endangerment of the child's well-being, however, there are important indications of a danger, while the existing danger cannot be clearly assessed. A typical example of the latter is injuries diagnosed by a doctor that are trivialized or even denied by those responsible for them. According to [MDR].
The different types of child endangerment
The Federal Statistical Office distinguishes between four main types of endangerment of children's welfare:
- Vernachlässigung
- Körperliche Misshandlung
- Psychische Misshandlung
- Sexuelle Gewalt
This distinction is very important because children and young people are often affected by several types of risk at the same time. This shows that in practice a complex interplay of various factors must be taken into account.
As Statista reports, the youth welfare offices also have the option of specifying different levels of risk. These include, among other things, acute and latent threats to the child's well-being, but also situations in which there is a need for help or support without there being a direct threat. In cases of acute or latent danger, children or young people may be taken into care, which represents a short-term protective measure.
It is undisputed that the topic of child welfare is a constant topic of discussion in current social discussions. The steady increase in the number of cases identified makes it clear that there is a need for action. Comprehensive education and support for families can potentially help to improve the situation and better protect children.
