25 years of Dörverdener train station: a milestone of mobility!

After 21 years without connection to rail passenger traffic, Dörverden celebrated the significant reopening of his station on June 1, 2025. This festive event was reminiscent of the reactivation of the stop 25 years ago. The Dörverden train station was the first in the All-Weser triangle in 1847 and played a central role in the regional connection.

The reopening in 2000 was the result of long -term efforts by the city and its citizens. In 1995 the "mission statement sustainable community" was decided, which declared the return to rail traffic to priority. This led to a survey that predicted forecast use of around 800 passengers on weekdays. The recommendation for reactivation was pronounced in 1997 and recorded in the state investment program. Extensive construction work on track systems, platforms and parking facilities were necessary for the implementation.

important developments and reviews

The Dörverden train station suffered several setbacks in the course of its history, including a closure in 1979 due to falling passenger numbers and bomb damage during the Second World War. Nevertheless, there was great interest in reviving. Mayor Alexander von Seggern described the train station as a decisive mobility hub in the All-Weser triangle, and the use has now risen to an average of 770 passengers on working days, with a large part of the trips to Bremen.

The celebrations for the construction of the station were accompanied by local politicians, including Dörverden's CDU parliamentary group leader Adrian Mohr and Verdens Mayor Lutz Brockmann. The Deutsche Bahn and the Bremen-Liedersachsen transport association alone distributed 10,000 free tickets to the opening, which made the train station even more popular. In recent years, new facilities such as a pedestrian tunnel and a transfer have also been added to further improve the accessibility.

reactivation of railway lines in Lower Saxony

The positive development of the Dörverdener railway is in the context of a larger trend in Lower Saxony. The state government has launched a reactivation initiative for disused railway lines. The state parliament has now added 21 out of 61 -certified rail connections to the closer selection to revive. This happens against the background of a decline in the regional trains, which was caused by the success of the automobile, and shows a clear turn towards strengthening rail traffic.

Economic and Transport Minister Olaf Lies (SPD) emphasizes the importance of the rail for rural regions and emphasizes that the reactivation of these routes is crucial for the future of mobility in Lower Saxony. Among the new routes included in the program are lines between Friesoythe and Cloppenburg as well as between Celle and Wittingen West. The parliamentary steering group plans to decide on the next steps of the reactivations in autumn.

The program for reviving the railway lines shows that there is also a rethink in transport policy in Lower Saxony. This could possibly also result in other positive developments for the transport offers and their use, similar to the reopening of the Dörverden train station.
