Bautzen under jungle pressure: CDU fights against weed chaos!
A lot is happening in Bautzen right now. Tobias Schilling, a CDU city councilor, has been recording the noticeable growth of weeds in the city lately and posted a startling video on social media. During his excursions he discovered some of the green corners that are no longer the city's prettiest business card. Especially at the intersection of Wallstrasse/Bahnhofstrasse/August-Bebel-Strasse, the weeds literally protrude up to a meter high, which not only looks unsightly but also raises safety concerns. However, Schilling does not blame the Bautzen subsidiary BBB for using tall grass - after all, financial resources are limited and the growing conditions this year were optimal. All Lusatia reports that Schilling suggests removing the weeds by hand, possibly by involving asylum seekers, which also points to new legal regulations from May 2024. The city administration of Bautzen reacts positively to the suggestions and is interested in a well-kept cityscape.
The administration confirms that the amount of care required in the city has increased and that action is necessary. Concrete measures could only be initiated through political resolutions, but Schilling plans to submit a proposal to the city council. He admits that many areas have no specific residents, which further complicates the situation. However, the use of alternative methods, such as hot water to combat weeds, could also increase the maintenance effort.
Traffic experiment to improve the quality of stay
But it's not just the untamed vegetation that's an issue in Bautzen. The CDU city council group has announced an exciting traffic trial for Schlossstrasse, which is to be carried out in the summer of 2025. The aim is to optimize the quality of stay on this boulevard and to keep car traffic out as much as possible. The plan is to close the road to main traffic from April to September, although delivery traffic should still be possible. The needs of restaurants and residents should be strongly integrated into the implementation. Sächsische.de explains that the city administration is commissioned to take over the planning of this experiment, taking into account the experiences from the urban development concept “Mission 2030+”.
The considerations surrounding traffic issues are not new and the discussion about a car-free city center has been going on for a long time. Schilling emphatically emphasizes the importance of including everyone involved. The involvement of innkeepers, hoteliers and local businesses plays a central role, as their feedback could have a strong influence on planning. In addition, the concerns of residents and the fire department must also be taken into account in the decision-making processes.
Sustainable urban development in view
The importance of sustainable urban development can be seen in both topics. Urban development in Bautzen should aim for vibrant settlements that serve both the social and economic needs of citizens. A comprehensive planning instrument, ranging from land-use planning to urban renovation, could be the key here. The Federal Environment Agency emphasizes the need to keep an eye on a balance between the different dimensions – economic, social, environmental and participation.
At the same time, the value of urban green spaces is highlighted, which should play an increased role in urban planning in the future. The aim is to involve citizens in the planning process in order to improve the quality of stay while at the same time not losing sight of environmental protection. In Bautzen it is clear that there is a lot to do - and that a good hand in urban planning is required in order to master the challenges of the future.
