Bautzen transforms parking spaces into green oases for Park(ing) Day!

On September 19, 2025, Bautzen will be the venue for the international Park(ing) Day, which offers an exciting change of perspective for urban spaces. On this day, four parking spaces at Lauengraben will be converted into temporary green spaces to show passers-by a new way of using public spaces. The event is organized by local organizations such as the Climate Alliance Bautzen, Teilrad Bautzen, Stadtbegrüner and the ADFC, all of which pursue a common goal: demonstrating the possibilities of urban quality of life without cars.

As the Saxon reported, the available areas are equipped with small lounges, green areas, seating, a children's playground and bicycle parking spaces. Park(ing) Day invites all citizens to use the newly designed areas, relax and visit various information stands.

The background of Park(ing) Day

Park(ing) Day has its roots in San Francisco, where the design studio Rebar launched the initiative in 2005. One of the first attempts at transformation was to convert a parking lot into a small park with turf, a tree and a bench for two hours. This creative idea has since developed into a global movement that now contributes to the annual campaign on the third Friday of September in over 160 cities. Like the page strange holidays describes, Park(ing) Day aims to raise awareness about the use of urban spaces and the reduction of areas for car traffic.

The success of the event is particularly lasting in cities like New York, where Times Square was temporarily converted into a pedestrian zone in 2009, which ultimately led to a permanent redesign. Loud myparkingday Park(ing) Day attracts thousands of participants each year and enables cities to reclaim urban space from cars, one parking space at a time.

These annual rededications not only provide an opportunity for creative use of public space, they also promote social exchange and artistic expression. The organizers in Bautzen hope that Park(ing) Day will not only be fun, but also raise awareness of the importance of green spaces in urban environments. So don't miss out on experiencing this colorful transformation of urban space together on September 19th!
