Bautzen is going green: 27 facades for a better urban climate by November!
The Bautzener Wohnungsbaugesellschaft (BWB) has come up with an exciting plan that not only brightens up the cityscape, but also makes a concrete contribution to improving the climate in the city. Specifically, it involves greening 27 house facades, and the project has a budget of an impressive 400,000 euros. A large part, namely 80 percent, is financed by a funding program from the Free State of Saxony. This makes the project particularly attractive for the city council, as the abundance of funding creates a lot of scope to enable sustainable change.
Where exactly is the green light given? The changes are visible in Adolf-Kolping-Strasse, Salvador-Allende-Strasse, Talstrasse and also along Dresdener Strasse, among others. In total, an impressive 2,000 square meters are to be professionally landscaped. The BWB actually submitted 27 applications for this funding program last year, and all were approved. A real hit!
Locations and technology
But how does it all work? Trellises are mounted on the walls of the house after the facades have been tested for their load-bearing capacity. This is a crucial step because safety comes first. When it comes to plants, the BWB has definitely shown a good hand with climbing hydrangeas, wild vine and ivy; These plants can grow up to 14 meters high, creating a lush green wall.
The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of November 2025. Interestingly, the BWB has already installed a test object for facade greening, which has been in operation for two years and is already producing initial positive results. Such greenery can significantly improve the city climate by reducing summer heat by up to eight degrees! This shows that such measures not only look stylish, but also offer functional advantages.
Urban climate and challenges
As a comprehensive analysis of climate change shows us, living conditions in cities are changing more and more. Rising temperatures due to sealing and construction areas are the order of the day. If we don't take countermeasures in time, there is a risk of heat, drought and heavy rain. Green roofs and facades are therefore particularly cost-effective and effective measures that many municipalities should consider. Not only can heat stress be reduced and air quality improved, but green oases of relaxation are also created in the middle of the urban jungle umweltbundesamt.de reports.
Another plus point: green spaces that are sealed as little as possible absorb rainwater and reduce the risk of flooding. Urban gardening is also a trend that is becoming increasingly important for many cities. The BWB is setting an example with its current project and shows that you can kill many birds with one stone with a well thought-out concept.
The trellis technology is installed by a specialized company that adapts the scaffolding individually to the building structure. The actual planting should also be completed within a few days, so that the neighborhood can soon benefit from the new green facets.
Overall, the project contributes to a significantly better urban climate and gives us hope for further similar commitments in the future. The BWB has an ambitious but feasible goal that other cities should use as a model.
