Acquittal for right-wing extremists: Bautzen under pressure from slogans!

A current court ruling is causing a stir in Bautzen. A 20-year-old right-wing extremist defendant was acquitted by the district court. The charge was based on the use of license plates of unconstitutional and terrorist organizations. At a demonstration on January 25, 2025 and a counter-protest for Christopher Street Day (CSD) in September 2024, the defendant is said to have chanted the banned slogan “Germany awaken”. However, the court found this to be unprovable. Judge Robert Klinkicht said there was insufficient evidence of the defendant's knowledge of the criminality of the slogan, reports the Saxon.

The defendant, a member of the right-wing extremist group “Urbs Turrium”, was active in various Monday protests and tried to influence the protest and win new followers. Slogans such as “Criminal foreigners out” are regularly chanted. According to the Saxon Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the group has established itself as right-wing extremist and also organized a demonstration against the CSD, which took place in August 2024. Meanwhile, the group's most recent actions, in which the defendant acted as an inciter, took place on March 29, 2025.

Right-wing extremism and CSD

In connection with the incidents at the CSD in Görlitz on September 28, 2024, right-wing extremist counter-demonstrators also appeared. Despite loud slogans from the right, the CSD was peaceful, as police spokeswoman Anja Leuschner reported. In order to protect the CSD participants, the police pushed back the right-wing counter-demonstrators. They were gathered at the Kornmarkt and loudly expressed their dislike.

The CSD event itself, with over 1,000 visitors, was characterized by tolerance and the call for the rights of LGBTQ+ people, and was reminiscent of the historical events at the Stonewall Inn. Participants wore less glitter for their own protection and there was a high police presence in Bautzen. Protests against the ongoing hostilities were also observed on the streets. Although serious topics were discussed, there was a good party atmosphere, especially at Postplatz.

Current figures on right-wing extremism

The problem of right-wing extremism remains alarming. According to that Protection of the Constitution The potential number of violent right-wing extremists in Germany is around 15,300 people. This number has increased compared to previous years. In 2024, over 37,800 right-wing extremist crimes were registered, an increase of 47.4% compared to the previous year.
