Criticism from Bautzen: Special funds cause dissatisfaction among municipalities!

In the Free State of Saxony, the state government and the municipalities have agreed on an important compromise regarding the special fund of 4.8 billion euros. This decision, like that Sächsische.de reports, represents the first step in the distribution of these funds and is a significant step in driving forward the urgently needed investments in infrastructure.

However, the distribution of the money causes a wide variety of reactions. Mayor Michael Herfort von Wilthen (CDU) has expressed clear concerns. He criticizes the fact that the decision-making processes took place behind closed doors and emphasizes that the municipalities should be better involved in the planning. “The minimum investment amount of 250,000 euros is too high,” he expresses his concerns, as many municipalities are already experiencing financial bottlenecks and may not be able to raise the necessary capital.

Investment summit for more clarity

In order to promote dialogue between those responsible, Petra Köpping, the Deputy Prime Minister of Saxony, is calling for an investment summit. This is reported by the daily news. The summit is intended to ensure that the billions from the special fund flow quickly and effectively into the necessary public infrastructure and bring noticeable improvements for citizens.

Köpping emphasizes the importance of constructive cooperation between the state government, local authorities, business and trade unions in order to avoid inefficiencies and to reach a quick agreement on the use of the funds. The money should flow particularly into key areas such as transport infrastructure, digitalization, hospitals and schools.

First steps for the distribution of funds

The state board of the Saxon Association of Cities and Municipalities has already brought a few points to the table regarding the distribution of the special infrastructure funds. The Saxon Cities and Municipalities Day speaks of an advance deduction of 10 percent of the funds for joint measures in the state and local interests. There are also efforts to reduce the minimum investment amount from 250,000 euros to 50,000 euros in order to give more municipalities the opportunity to benefit from the funding.

Special attention is paid to the formation of effective infrastructure projects to ensure that these funds actually benefit local communities. Bert Wendsche, President of the SSG, appeals to state politicians to seriously reconsider these points. The planned investments are to flow into roads, bridges and education over the next four years and are therefore aimed at long-term improvement of the infrastructure in Saxony.

The upcoming discussions and decisions are of great importance for many municipalities as they will create the basis for future developments. “Something is coming!”, one could say, because time is running out and citizens are waiting for noticeable changes in their daily infrastructure.
