The Bautzen district is investing over one million euros in disaster protection
The Bautzen district is currently investing heavily to strengthen disaster protection. At a meeting of the district council it was announced that more than one million euros would be made available in 2025, which is more than double the funding from the previous year. This was reported by Sächsische.de. Not only should investments be made in equipment, but comprehensive risk analyzes and planning measures to avert danger should also be carried out. The increasing threat of floods, forest fires and industrial accidents makes the topic more relevant than ever before.
An important aspect of the plan is the provision of necessary materials. In total, investments of 263,500 euros are planned for 2025, which will flow into sandbags, mobile power generators and rescue kits for rail accidents, among other things. Further investments amounting to around 770,000 euros are already planned for the years 2026 to 2028. The district sees an urgent need for action based on the findings from risk analyses.
Expansion of the warning infrastructure
In order to significantly increase safety for citizens, the city of Bautzen is also planning to expand its siren network. Two new sirens are to be installed in Gesundbrunnen and Stieberstrasse. The total costs amount to 52,000 euros, which have already been decided by the city council. According to information from Bautzen.de, warning the population is planned in two phases: First with an acoustic signal, followed by information via electronic media. This system is particularly important for people outdoors or for those who have no other means of communication. The infrastructure is continually being expanded in order to be prepared for particularly critical situations such as storms or leaks of hazardous substances.
The federal modular warning system, known as MoWaS, is also used. This enables quick warning messages via various channels such as apps, television or sirens in communities.
Modernization and networking
The Bautzen district has not only improved its equipment, but also modernized the management structures in disaster control. Fixed contact persons have been defined for this purpose, and a staff room in Kamenz enables a quicker response in an emergency. These comprehensive developments are in accordance with the guidelines of the [Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK)](https://www.bbk.bund.de/DE/Themen/ Krisenmanagement/kritikenmanagement_node.html). The BBK highlights the need to continuously optimize crisis management and relies on a network that includes state and private actors.
Further training and regular exercises are also part of the effort to increase operational capability in emergencies. Another highlight on the calendar is participation in a nationwide disaster response exercise planned for 2025.
There are already well-functioning structures for this in the Bautzen district: The units include, among other things, management groups for fire protection, various rescue service platoons and a rescue dog squad. In addition, the volunteer operations managers are prepared for exceptional situations and regularly receive further training.
With the increased investments and ongoing modernization, the Bautzen district will be even better able to meet the challenges of possible crises. The safety of citizens is the top priority.
