Lusatia in change: 69% demand drastic changes for the future!
A lot is happening in Lusatia. A current survey has shown that over two thirds of the population necessarily consider fundamental changes. Almost 69 % of those surveyed feel that the change in the region is essential for the future. This survey was carried out by the MAS Society for Market Analysis and Strategy in March and April 2025 and clearly shows that the desire for change in 2025 is most pronounced. But what does the mood look like in the population? Despite the growing insight into the need for changes, the mood remains largely stable and even slightly optimistic, the Sächsische Zeitung .
But there are also worry lines. The fears of the labor market, increasing inflation and the general economic situation remain high. In Central Germany in particular, only 47 % support the energy transition, while in Lusatia this number is 44 %. An early coal phase -out, which is often regarded as a solution, is rejected by the majority of citizens there. Here it becomes clear: it is not only talked about changes, but also about necessary steps in structural change.
political framework conditions
The coal phase -out and the associated structural changes have not only been an issue since yesterday. As early as 2018, the Federal Government set up the Commission "Growth, Structural Change and Employment" (KWSB). Their goal was to achieve a consensus on the coal phase-out in a social debate, which is also held in the reports of the Federal Government
With the coal exit law, a clear timetable was finally developed, which is to end the entire coal generation in Germany by 2038 at the latest. The implementation of this law, which was adopted in July 2020, harbors both challenges and opportunities for the affected regions. A key piece is the Structural Strengthening Act Kohleregions, which has been in force since August 2020 and ensures that up to 40 billion euros are available. This is intended to actively accompany the structural change.
economic perspectives
A central point in structural change is the creation of new jobs. By the end of 2028, at least 5,000 new jobs are to be implemented in federal authorities in the lignite regions. In addition, various programs, such as "Company Revier", support innovative ideas for structural change. But something is not only happening at the federal level; Regional initiatives are also highly in demand to make change successfully.
The way to the future is paved with possibilities, but also fears. It remains to be seen how the population in Lusatia will react to the upcoming changes. However, one thing is certain: the region is facing a pioneering transformation, and the coming years will be crucial for the design of their economic and social perspectives.
