At the same time, Mayor Karsten Vogt (CDU) indicates a serious problem: the city is fighting the increasing vacancy in the city center. Karl-Marx-Straße, the Inner Lauenstraße and the Kornmarkt Center, where more and more business are emptying up. Proud 92 shops are currently empty in Bautzen, and until 2027 only 30 of them should remain unused - an ambitious goal! The commitment of new concepts is required, because the city does not simply want to switch to apartments, but is looking for contemporary uses for the empty areas.

In order to fight the challenges more effectively, the position of the city manager will be re-activated, which was deleted in 2020 on the basis of a budget decision. Annett Scholz-Michalowski, an experienced entrepreneur from the photography area, will in future be devoted to this important project. Your goal is to make the Bautzen city center more digital and to create an online platform for local products. The financing of the city management is secured until March 2027, thanks to a federal funding of 400,000 euros.

The city administration is also committed to the "integrated urban development concept 2030+", which offers a long -term strategic orientation for economic development in Bautzen. The aim is to strengthen Bautzen as an economic center of Upper Lusatia and to secure funding. Not only should the inner -city structures be promoted, but also the economic interdependencies with the compressed space around Dresden should be intensified.
