New Rewe store in Sohland: opportunities and concerns of local residents!
Something exciting is happening in the idyllic community of Sohland on the Spree: the discounter Rewe is planning to open a new supermarket right next to the existing Penny market. Around 37,000 people live within a ten-kilometer radius, and for many of them the new shopping offer could represent a welcome expansion of local supplies. But the emerging joy is overshadowed by skepticism. That reports Sächsische.de.
A spokeswoman for the company confirmed the plans and emphasized that this location in the Bautzen district and the community of Sohland/Spree are considered attractive. The new store is to be built on Bahnhofstrasse and is planned as an energy-efficient “Rewe Green Building” that will use over 40% less energy than conventional supermarkets. For this purpose, natural, low-pollutant building materials are used, including sustainable wooden elements, which is entirely in the spirit of climate protection ( Weekly Courier ).
A citizens' forum brings different opinions
A citizens' forum to clarify expansion plans was held last week, attended by about 100 residents and guests. Moderated by former district administrator Michael Harig, the residents' concerns were discussed. Uwe Krause, expansion manager at Penny, made it clear that modernizing the existing market would not be profitable, which was supported by local councilor Marlen Martin. However, she pointed out that the shopping area in Sohland is currently 580 square meters per 1,000 inhabitants - well above the Saxony-wide average. With the new Rewe, this number would increase to 850 square meters, which concerns some residents.
Concerns about possible sales losses for existing markets such as Penny, Netto and Edeka were loudly expressed. Edeka representatives expressed concerns about a possible relocation of customers and the consequences for local retail. The Saxony Trade Association is critical of the settlement and speaks of an “arms race” in the food retail sector. Only the board stated that they saw positive aspects in the opening of the new market ( Sächsische.de ).
The next steps and future of local supply
The Sohland local council is now faced with a decision on the development plan. The first votes are expected at the next meeting on August 21st. The issue of local supply is not only important in Saxony, but also shows how challenging it is for rural regions in Austria to secure their food service. A study highlights that the density of food retailers in rural areas is decreasing, often having an existential impact on communities. Local suppliers are indispensable for basic supplies and quality of life in smaller towns. ( wko.at ).
Rewe's project could play an important role in the future of local supply in Sohland, but it will be exciting to see what decisions the local council will make and how the residents will react to the changes.
