Horrible accident in Bautzen: cyclist trapped under van!
On Tuesday morning, July 15, 2025, there was a serious traffic accident in Bautzen in which a cyclist was hit by a van. The incident occurred around 10 a.m. when the van collided with the cyclist while leaving an exit on Löbauer Straße. The bicycle came under the vehicle, resulting in serious injuries to the cyclist. A rescue helicopter had to be called in to take the injured person to a clinic. The driver of the van suffered shock and received medical treatment on site from the emergency services. The police have started investigating the exact cause of the accident, while Löbauer Straße was completely closed during the operation, as Blick.de reports.
Such tragic incidents cast a shadow on the current traffic situation for cyclists in Germany. According to the Federal Statistical Office, a total of 441 cyclists lost their lives in traffic in 2024. This means that one in six traffic fatalities is a cyclist. Compared to 2023, there was a decrease of 33 deaths, but this is still an increase of 11.4 percent in a ten-year comparison. What is particularly alarming is the increasing number of Pedelec users, which is contributing to an increase in accidents. Of the cyclists who were fatally injured, 43.5 percent were on e-bikes, which is almost five times more than ten years ago. This development worries experts because, according to Tagesschau.de, older cyclists are particularly at risk. Almost two thirds of the fatally injured cyclists were in the over 65 age group.
The dangers for cyclists
As Tagesspiegel.de reports, 70.7 percent of the 92,882 registered bicycle accidents in 2024 were collisions with cars. Drivers were primarily to blame for these accidents in 75.3 percent of cases. Most fatal accidents often occur at intersections and driveways, further fueling the debate about road safety for cyclists. The General German Bicycle Club (ADFC) is calling for more comprehensive measures to improve cycle paths. According to a survey, 70 percent of those surveyed felt unsafe on the roads.
Every accident is one too many, and the incident in Bautzen shows once again that cyclists are often in a dangerous position on the road. Especially in times when more and more people are switching to bicycles, it is crucial to increase road safety and take preventative measures. Stay careful and alert, whether you're a cyclist or a driver - no one wants an everyday ride to turn into a tragic accident.
