Sensational discovery in Bautzen: contemporary witnesses of the Reichsbahn appeared!
There was recently a discovery in Bautzen that caused a stir. During renovation work in the former railway traffic office on Tzschirnerstrasse, workers came across a very special kind of dusty time capsule. Under an old floorboard they found a crumpled plastic bag that contained two newspapers and several typewriter sheets as well as a document from the Deutsche Reichsbahn and a small pill box with a handwritten note.
The location is particularly interesting because the building, which was built in 1912, served as a driving license office from 2001. The conversion to the new district music school is currently underway. The contemporary evidence that the team discovered dates from 1968 and 1969 and provides a fascinating insight into the period.
Insights into the past
Among the typewriter sheets was a report from Brigade IV on the status of the “collective of socialist work” from 1968. Part of the discovery was also a driving booklet from the Deutsche Reichsbahn, which lists slow driving places from February 23rd to March 1st, 1969. It's amazing what stories these documents could tell.
The handwritten note in the pill bottle comes from Wilfried Teich, a district dispatcher and member of Brigade IV. Interestingly, Teich worked in the railway administration office for 15 years. In his note he mentions the use of painkillers (acetophene). These references to everyday life back then shed a fascinating light on the lives and challenges of the people of that time. Wilfried Teich could be in his mid-90s today and perhaps he is still alive.
Naming of descendants
The Bautzen district office is very interested in finding Wilfried Teich and possibly his descendants in order to invite them to the inauguration of the new district music school in August 2026. A remarkable step to keep history alive and honor connections to the past. Anyone who has information about Teich can contact the district office's press office directly.
This exciting find shows that construction work can not only create new spaces, but also serve as a door to history. Bautzen remains a place where the past is alive and stories are told that should not be forgotten. Such finds are like puzzle pieces that expand our view of history and remind us where we come from.
