Tragic death of an artist: circus performance in Bautzen shaken
A tragic event caused consternation in Bautzen on Saturday. At a circus performance in the “Circus Paul Busch” tent, a 27-year-old artist from Spain fell from the trapeze during her performance. The accident happened shortly before 6 p.m. from a height of around five meters, and the young woman died from her serious injuries at the scene of the accident. Almost 100 spectators, including many families with children, were there live when the accident occurred. There was great shock and numerous spectators fled the circus tent before the rescue workers arrived to take care of those affected.
A crisis intervention team was immediately deployed to care for both guests and circus employees. The police advise viewers, especially children, to contact the support hotline that has been set up and get support.
Safe standards in the circus
The incident sheds light on safety standards in the circus world. As the Circus and circus education shows, safety measures are of the utmost importance. Circus performers are often responsible for the safe construction of their equipment. Despite the applicable standards, it is known that there was no evidence of third-party negligence in the woman's accident - the incident is classified as an industrial accident. The chairman of the Association of German Circus Companies (VDCU) said that the artist probably fell on an obstacle.
The Cirus “Paul Busch” only gave its first performance in Bautzen on Friday, which was to be accompanied by further performances until October 5th. It remains to be seen whether the tent will remain up after this tragic incident.
The police have set up a hotline to protect and support unsettled spectators: 03571 19 29 6 and 112. This sad incident shows once again how quickly accidents can happen in circuses and increases awareness of safety issues in the industry. Parents and children are invited to get help if needed and to talk about the experience.
