The hustle and bustle has begun: The 15th International Folklore Festival in Lausitz started on Thursday, an event that will enliven the region with music, dance and traditional costumes from all over the world until Sunday. How MDR Reportedly, there are over 300 participants from abroad and just as many participants from Lusatia on site to celebrate the diversity of folklore.
For the ceremonial opening, the various folklore groups paraded through the streets of Bautzen and presented the hometown with a colorful parade. The highlight was a gala in the German-Sorbian Folk Theater, where Carmen Rosa Bejarano Gonzalez from Colombia emphasized the importance of this festival for cultural exchange. Your group, the Grupo de Danzas of the Uni del Valle, is one of the most renowned folklore ensembles in Colombia and guarantees high excitement.
Cultural diversity at the center
Numerous folklore ensembles take part in the festival, which is organized by Domowina, the Federal Association of Lusatian Sorbs. These include groups from Poland, Slovakia, Iran, Croatia and Senegal. The latter are represented for the first time by the Saly Velingara Ballet, which performs traditional West African dances and impressive live percussion. The organizers focus on the cultural heritage of small ethnic groups and minorities and invite groups with intangible cultural heritage, as festival director Peter Bresan explains Minority Secretariat.
Particular highlights of the festival are the events in Drachhausen and Crostwitz. Here, visitors are offered a colorful program of traditional costumes, music and dance, and there are also regional specialties to enjoy. The participants have the opportunity to exchange ideas with the folklore groups and immerse themselves in their cultures.

- Donnerstag, 26. Juni: Festumzug in Bautzen, feierliche Eröffnung im Deutsch-Sorbischen Volkstheater.
- Freitag, 27. Juni: Estrade internationaler Folklore in Drachhausen, begleitet von regionalen Spezialitäten.
- Samstag, 28. Juni: Musik, Gesang und Tanz in Crostwitz, Präsentation des immateriellen Kulturerbes und “Crostwitz-Special” am Abend.
- Sonntag, 29. Juni: Mehrsprachiger Festgottesdienst, Festumzug und großes Finale auf der Hauptbühne.
The culinary delights are also taken care of, and the farms in Crostwitz open their doors to a market of traditional crafts that provides insights into regional crafts.
The festival not only presents a piece of culture, but also sets an example for cohesion and understanding between cultures. It is shown again and again how important it is to preserve the traditional values and vitality of the different peoples.
