A72 becomes a construction site: renovation from August 2025 and major traffic changes!

The A72 motorway will be extensively renovated from August 2025 between the Chemnitz-Süd junction and the Chemnitz motorway junction in the direction of Leipzig. The reason for this measure is significant damage to the existing road surface, which consists of porous asphalt. The renovation work extends over a length of three kilometers and is expected to last until December 2025 LEIPZIGER INTERNET NEWSPAPER reported.

Several measures are planned to increase traffic safety and improve the quality of life of residents. This includes replacing the road surface with a noise-reducing, open-pored asphalt, replacing the sealing layer, partially replacing the drainage systems and replacing markings. The use of modern asphalt could also help to reduce pollution and noticeably reduce noise for residents - a goal that is also being pursued by various research projects at the Technical University of Berlin is sought.

Traffic restrictions and diversions

However, the renovation also brings with it some traffic restrictions. From July 14, 2025, the Chemnitz-Süd exit from the B173 to the A72 in the direction of Leipzig will be completely closed until November 27, 2025. Road users must expect lane reductions and road narrowings. In addition, the Chemnitz-Rottluff junction in the direction of Leipzig will be closed between September 16th and 29th, 2025, although diversions are also planned here. Detours for the diversion routes have already been set up to keep traffic moving as smoothly as possible.

The future redesigned traffic routing will initially provide for a two-lane driveway in both directions. Later, vehicles will have three lanes available in the direction of Leipzig, while two lanes will be available in the direction of Hof. Two truck lanes in each direction will also remain. The entire measure is estimated to cost around 6 million euros gross.

Modern materials for construction work

The required material is provided, among other things, by the CVB Saxony provided. The company has modern processing facilities with mixing laboratories for quality assurance, ensuring that all materials meet current technical standards. In particular, their mixing plant in Breitenau is considered the most modern plant since 2006 and is ideally designed to meet the high requirements.

The demands on modern building materials have increased. An innovative approach to improving roads involves improving urban air quality with so-called photocatalytic asphalt. This new asphalt overlay will be designed to reduce airborne pollutants and reduce noise. At regular intervals, a mobile quality measurement system ensures that the processing parameters are always kept in mind.

Traffic flow and safety during construction work are always the top priority. The responsible authorities ask all road users to understand and resolutely adapt their driving style during the renovation work.
