Drunk driver caught with 3.04 per mille on lawnmower tractor!
What a strange scene took place in Chemnitz on Tuesday evening, August 5, 2025! The police were alerted by an attentive witness who saw a drunk man riding a lawnmower tractor on Börnichsgasse. Once again it shows that alcohol consumption is not only carried out on the road, but also on unexpected vehicles.
Shortly afterwards, the police officers were able to find the suspected driver, a 24-year-old, at Rosenhof. What this check revealed was more than alarming: a breath alcohol test showed a whopping 3.04 per mille. This is a value that is far above what is considered safe and poses an acute risk to the driver and the general public.
Drunk driving: a life-threatening decision
The legal consequences are not long in coming. The young man was taken to have his blood drawn and is now facing charges of drunk driving. In addition, it is being examined whether he may have committed further traffic violations. His unusual "vehicle" was confiscated because it was apparently hot-wired and police were unable to confirm whether the 24-year-old was the legal owner of the lawn tractor.
If you drive drunk, you have to face the consequences. From just 0.3 per mille there is a risk of fines or imprisonment, and the risk of serious accidents increases dramatically. As the ADAC explains, a blood alcohol level of just 0.2 per mille can impair concentration and movement coordination. From 3.0 per mille, people are severely alcohol poisoned and their lives are in danger, although a level of 4.0 per mille often ends with respiratory arrest or vomiting.
Given these numbers, it is hardly surprising that the police receive numerous calls with tips about suspicious driving. The Chemnitz police are asking witnesses to contact their station in Chemnitz-Nordost in order to collect additional information that could help clarify the case.
Events and alcohol: a sensitive topic
Drunk driving is a widespread problem that is also being discussed more in the light of leisure events. Even though the number of alcohol-related accidents has been reduced in recent decades, the topic remains as relevant as ever. In 2023, more than 18,000 people died in alcohol-related accidents, a frightening statistic that shows how important prevention and awareness are.
It is important for all those who drive or take part in events to use alcohol responsibly. The combination of alcohol and vehicles – be they cars or even lawnmower tractors – inevitably poses risks that can be easily avoided. Anyone who thinks that a small drink has no effect is mistaken. A responsible attitude should be the priority.
The incidents in Chemnitz are another wake-up call that it is important to be aware of your own limits and avoid such dangerous situations. Whether literally “on the lawn” or on the street – safety is always the top priority.
