This award has been presented since 2004 to honor people, projects and initiatives that are committed to non-violent and inclusive coexistence. The opening of this initiative coincided with the Intercultural Weeks 2023, which represents a further step towards an open and tolerant society.

Similar to last year, when the “Kältebus Chemnitz” initiative was chosen as the winner, the Peace Prize sends a clear signal against exclusion and racism. The deadline for submission of proposals is January 7, 2026, and all Chemnitz residents are warmly invited to nominate suitable people and projects. Self-applications are also welcome!

This is how the nomination works

This happy occasion is celebrated under the motto “Peace for the City – A City for Peace”.

Success stories of the past few years

A look back at the 2025 winners shows that the initiative awards more than just one prize. The first prize went to the “Kältebus Chemnitz”, which offers important help in the city, while the second prize went to the Mittel- Punkt e. V. and the third prize went to the “Grandmas and Grandpas Against the Right” initiative. At their side was the honorary award, Dr. Thomas Schuler, a historian, was awarded. The “Democracy Group of the Lower Luisenschule” was also awarded the Children and Youth Prize.

It is important to make visible the activities that promote peace, integration and tolerance. The cooperation between the citizens' association FUER CHEMNITZ e. V. and the city's migration commissioner as well as the Crime Prevention Council is another step in the right direction to raise awareness of this important issue. As the stories of the award winners show, this will continue to be of great importance in the years to come.
