Drug crime in focus
These incidents are part of a larger problem. Drug or narcotic crime includes all crimes under the Narcotics Act (BtMG) and has noticeably expanded in recent years. According to current figures from Statista Around 347,000 drug crime cases were recorded by the police in Germany in 2023. This represents an increase of 2 percent compared to the previous year. Around 208,000 of these cases were cannabis-related, which has been partially legal since April 2024.
The increase in drug trafficking offenses is particularly alarming. Around 55,500 such offenses were registered in 2023, with cannabis still being the most important substance. It is noteworthy that the police and customs are repeatedly confronted with large quantities of illegal drugs, which are often smuggled into the country.
Social challenges
The health and social consequences of drug use are significant. In 2023, the number of drug deaths in Germany rose to around 2,230. Most of these tragic cases are due to long-term health damage caused by excessive drug use. Cities like Bremen in particular recorded high numbers of drug-related deaths - there were around five cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Given these developments, not only the authorities but also society as a whole should work together to address this burning issue. The incidents in Chemnitz are a stark reminder that there is an urgent need for action.
