In Chemnitz, art and culture lovers need to dress warmly! The exciting art festival “Begehungen” will take place in the former Chemnitz Nord II thermal power plant from July 18th to August 17th, 2025. Today, July 4th, 2025, the Freie Presse announced that a raffle for an exclusive preview tour has been launched on July 16th, 2025 at 5 p.m. To take part in the raffle, you must register for the Capital of Culture newsletter “Fetzt.” required by the Freie Presse, where further information about the festival is also provided. The Freie Presse reports this in its newsletter, where the cooperation with eins energie in sachsen as a partner of the festival is also highlighted. This company makes part of the disused power plant site available.
But let’s not forget the exciting program that the “inspections” have in store! In addition to the exhibition, there will also be a colorful festival program with concerts, readings, lectures and performances, all of which are inspired by the works in the exhibition and the special conditions of the location. On July 19th, the festival will be opened by KMA with the two bands Bikini Beach and Kochkraft in garage rock and indie rave punk style. On July 20th, Mina Richman will be on stage with her soul, folk and hip hop sounds.
Cultural highlights and interactive events
Enjoy exciting performances! On August 2nd, the duo Drone Operator & Joss Turnbull will take to the stage with a unique soundtrack. On August 8th, Yaneq will bring his rhymes and thoughts into the atmosphere. The crowning conclusion of the festival on August 17th will be the fictional band Superbusen and The Odd Time Bend, who will present new film music from the all-star ensemble.
The festival also has culinary and social ingredients: on July 27th you can chat and enjoy vinyl at the record picnic, while on August 8th there will be a talk about “Interaction, Neighborhood and Energy”. The spectrum even extends so far that visitors can sing together at the choir karaoke on July 20th - you'll immediately know what the neighbors are like!
The connecting element: art and society
Another exciting program item is the play “Nature is Right” by Elisabeth Weydt on July 27th, followed by the climate monologues on August 15th. This documentary theater performance by Michael Ruf is carried out in collaboration with the Heinrich Böll Foundation Sachsen e.V. Uwe Ritzer will also set a socially critical tone with “The Sellout: Water, Soil, Raw Materials” on August 16th.
And the best thing: Anyone who would like to finally get an impression of the aesthetics of art in space can look forward to an impressive video work until June 14th, in which edited photographs of open garages that were sent in by people from Chemnitz will be shown. This digital gallery is brought to life by the artist Klaus Pobitzer and includes, among other things, fictional image worlds with historical figures and everyday objects that build a bridge between reality and fiction.
The “inspections” not only show the creativity of the artists, but also how closely the Chemnitz cultural community works together. A visit is definitely worth it!
