Discover Chemnitz: museums, highlights and barrier-free access!

Chemnitz, the dynamic city in western Saxony, has made a name for itself as the “Saxon Manchester”. This city, which originally began as a medieval trading settlement, developed into a major industrial center in Germany in the 19th century. Today, Chemnitz combines elegant historical architecture with exciting modern urban development and offers a rich cultural landscape with numerous museums that focus on art, history and technology. A real highlight is the State Museum of Archeology, or smac for short, which is located in the Schocken department store on Stefan-Heym-Platz.

The smac not only presents important exhibitions on archeology, but is also a place for anyone who wants to delve deeper into the history of the region. The opening times are from Tuesday to Sunday and on public holidays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Thursdays even until 8 p.m. However, Monday is a rest day.

Entrance fees and accessibility

The admission prices are more than fair: adults pay 8 euros for the permanent exhibition and 5 euros for concessions, while families are allowed in with a family ticket for 12 euros. There are also reduced prices for the special exhibition. And entry is even free for children up to 16 years old.

Particularly noteworthy is the accessibility of the smac. Access is well prepared for all visitors: barrier-free entrance, elevators and even a free audio guide for the blind and visually impaired. Folding wheelchairs and walkers are also available so that everyone can enjoy the exhibitions. The Weiße Stock e.V. offers an accompanying service for blind and visually impaired people upon registration. This ensures that no one is left out. Further information can be found on the museum website.

How do I get to the vehicle museum?

If you would like to visit another exciting museum in Chemnitz, we recommend the Vehicle Museum. There are several ways to get there. A simple option is to travel by train to Chemnitz main station. From there it's just a few steps to the Hauptbahnhof-Dresdner Straße stop, from where bus number 31 leads directly to the vehicle museum - that means: changing is not possible!

Alternatively, you can take tram number 23 from the central stop. All you have to do is get off at the Marianne-Brandt-Straße stop and walk a little. A third option is to take the regional train to Chemnitz Mitte and take a short walk to the museum.

The vehicle museum has a lot to offer and can also be visited barrier-free. Information counters and cash registers are easily accessible here, making the visit a pleasure for everyone. More detailed directions can be found directly on the museum website.

Chemnitz as part of the Capital of Culture 2025

In addition, it is noteworthy that Chemnitz was named European Capital of Culture 2025. This award offers the city the opportunity to present itself as a center of artistic exchange and innovative creativity. Chemnitz University of Technology underlines the educational offerings and contributes to research and development in the region.

With so much on the agenda, Chemnitz is the perfect place for a trip, whether you love art, history or technology - everyone will find what they are looking for here!
