Express buses between Leipzig and Chemnitz: extension until July 2025!

The express bus connection between Leipzig and Chemnitz is very popular and has now been extended until July 15, 2025. The Mitteldeutsche Regiobahn (MRB) informs that the buses run every half hour and without intermediate stops between the main train stations of both cities. This measure is intended to provide relief on the heavily used RE6 railway line, particularly during peak hours, which has had to contend with train cancellations and overcrowded carriages in the past. The bus journey time is approximately one hour and 20 minutes, and the regular RE6 trains continue to run without any changes.

But what is the reason for this additional bus connection? According to reports, a tense local transport situation is causing the Chemnitz rail initiative to demand more capacity. In recent months, 24 train services have been canceled on the route, representing two percent of all train journeys. Despite the problems, the route's punctuality rate remains at a respectable 85 percent.

Challenges and solutions

The use of the express buses was requested by the Central Saxony Transport Association and is initially limited to June 28th, with the prospect of a subsequent extension. In addition, the bus frequency will be increased to half an hour from Wednesday in order to meet the needs of the public. So the connection between both cities is busy and the buses seem to be a clever solution to defuse the situation while the MRB works on a long-term solution.

More modern battery-powered trains were originally planned for use on the RE6 line, but cannot be put into operation as desired due to delivery difficulties. Instead, double-decker trains are used, which, however, also present some difficulties. All of this is putting a damper on mobility in the region.

Public transport on the rise

The buses and trains are not only practical, they also make a significant contribution to climate protection by saving around 10 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions every day. This is also reflected in the value created by the sustainable mobility economy, which amounts to around 118 billion euros in Germany. It is estimated that every euro invested in this industry generates an additional 2.40 euros in added value.

The extension of the express buses between Leipzig and Chemnitz is a step in the right direction to meet the needs of commuters and travelers and maintain important connections. It remains to be seen what further measures will be taken to keep the public transport network in the region stable and further expand it.
