Flamingo offspring in the Chemnitz zoo: a festival of the colorful chicks!

Tierpark Chemnitz, 09116 Chemnitz, Deutschland - in Chemnitz there is currently a particularly gratifying reason to be happy: in the Chemnitz are slipped. The first two chicks saw the light of day at the beginning of Junis, six more followed until June 14th. For the zoo visitors: there is a lot to observe inside, as some eggs are still incubated and other chicks are possible. This is already the fourth successful offsetting of these fascinating birds in the Chemnitz zoo since 2022.

The breeding success of the flamigos is remarkable, since these animals were considered to be not breedable, despite over 100 years of attitude in various zoological facilities. The first attempts at breeding took place in the 1940s, 50s and 60s, but for a long time it remained calm about the folk growth in Chemnitz. It was only since the group of Rosaflamingos was enlarged in 2015, there have been the first courtship activities that finally led to these successes.

behind the scenes of breeding

The breeding of these animals requires special conditions. Flamingos need a certain group size and a balanced gender ratio to be able to reproduce. The environment also plays a crucial role: changes in the environment can negatively influence reproduction. In the Chemnitz zoo, the zookeepers were able to contribute significantly to breeding success in the inside by building bowling awards. The chicks are both raised by the parents and naturally spread out, which makes rearing in the zoo particularly clearly.

The little flamingos can be seen by their delicate size and the white-grayish plumage. Interestingly, the plumage only turns pink later when carotenoids are deposited out of food in the body. By the way: Rosaflamingos only reach their full plumage at over three years.
