Art market blooms: Entanglements” attracts 12,000 visitors to Flöha!

On Wednesday, July 16, 2025, visitors streamed into the Flöha Kunstbahnhof to explore the “Entanglements” exhibition. One of the most prominent couples among the guests were the married couple Brigitte and Werner Sieber from Augustusburg, who were the 12,000th person to visit the exhibition. This event is part of the PURPLE PATH, a special component of the European Capital of Culture 2025, and has proven to be a real magnet for art lovers and the curious.

Alexander Ochs, the curator of the PURPLE PATH, warmly welcomed the guests. He emphasized how important this exhibition is for the region, which is characterized by its long textile tradition. Until 1994, Flöha was an important location for the textile industry, where thousands of workers flocked to the train station every day to work in the factories. Ochs emphasized the positive response from citizens and the interest in urban development, as Mayor Volker Holuscha also noted.

The exhibition “Entanglements”

The exciting exhibition shows international artistic positions that are closely interwoven with the textile history of the region. Artists such as Antje Engelmann, Katharina Fritsch, and Käthe Kollwitz present their works and represent the connection between tradition and innovation. Curated by Susanne Weiß from the Institute for Foreign Relations (ifa), the exhibition acts like a dialogue between modern art and the rich history of the region.

In addition to the artistic exhibits, the history of textile production is also discussed. Factors such as the effect of materials and traditional patterns as well as their latest interpretations are examined. The show is always enriched by stimulating discussions and events, including a workshop with UndoYarn on August 1st and a coffee party on August 2nd.

The view of the finissage

The end of the exhibition will be celebrated with a finissage on August 3, 2025, where visitors can take a last look at the impressive works with a free cultural coffee and guided tours. Stefan Schmidtke, program managing director, announced that the aim is to continuously promote art and tourism in order to further enrich the cultural landscape.

The textile collection associated with the exhibition has its origins in a model collection from 1898 and includes impressive exhibits ranging from the 19th to the 21st century. This collection is continually expanding and is unique in Europe due to its quality and diversity. The majority of the exhibits come from the heyday of Chemnitz's industrial age and show, among other things, important textiles by artists such as William Morris and Karl Lagerfeld, which also illustrates the constant connection to the region's textile culture.

As the relevant reports show, the “Entanglements” exhibition has developed into a central point where art enthusiasts can not only admire the works of international artists, but also immerse themselves in the living history of the region. The public will have the opportunity to attend this unique cultural event until August 3, 2025.
