Do it greener: Chemnitz celebrates nature in September 2023!

In September 2023, the city of Chemnitz will once again make its green days a highlight for environmentalists and nature lovers. The “Make it Greener Days” initiative will take place for the third time from September 1st to 30th. The aim of this event is to highlight the importance of “nature in the city” and show citizens how they can actively influence their environment. A colorful array of activities is on the program, organized by a dedicated team from the city planning office, the environmental department and the green spaces department of the city of Chemnitz. Chemnitz reports that ...

The program is varied and offers something for everyone. There are public and free lectures, tours on nature-related topics, and courses at the adult education center. The bike tour to the Chemnitz community gardens will be particularly exciting, as it offers the opportunity to find out more about urban gardening. Finally, an exploration tour along the Chemnitz River is also on the program - a treat for all nature enthusiasts.

One climax after another

On September 6th, during the “City Cycling” campaign, there was a rally that led from the Karl Marx Monument to the eins Stadium on Gellertstrasse. This rally is part of European Mobility Week and brings cyclists together to send a clear message for climate protection. But the Climate Adaptation Week and the Building Green Action Week, which Chemnitz is taking part in from September 18th to 22nd, also underline the diverse effects of this series of events. These events aim to raise awareness of the importance of climate protection and adaptation. Blick reports that ...

Another highlight during this time is the Green Roof Forum on September 21st, where everything to do with green roofs and climate adaptation measures is on the agenda. Anyone interested can take part here free of charge to obtain comprehensive information about the topic. On September 22nd, the Urban Nature Slam at Weltecho will be a true festival of poetry, while the children's conference on September 25th in the city council hall of the town hall will give the youngest people the chance to raise their voices on the topics of sustainability and climate protection.

Urban gardening in focus

A central aspect of these green days are the community gardens. In the context of urban gardening, which is becoming increasingly important worldwide, it is clear how important it is to promote green spaces in urban areas. Over 50% of the Earth's population now lives in cities, highlighting the need to create sustainable living spaces. Urban gardening improves the quality of life and contributes to urban ecology by increasing urban biodiversity and regulating microclimate. The sustainability channel reports that...

As part of this initiative, the “Chemnitz is blooming” project is also being presented, which is developing solutions to create more flowering diversity. The dialogue between citizens and experts is promoted in order to establish sustainable practices such as rainwater collection systems and compost-based soils in community gardens.

The “Make it greener days” not only offer a platform to collect ideas and exchange knowledge, but also strengthen social cohesion in the community. Chemnitz shows that a green city is not only more beautiful, but can also make an active contribution to climate protection!
