Men in charge: Chemnitz celebrates International Men's Day!
On November 19, 2025, it's that time again: International Men's Day is just around the corner, this year with the motto "Men in charge!" is celebrated. This special event will take place from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Schauplatz Eisenbahn in Chemnitz and is organized by the municipal equal opportunities officer Franziska Herold. Men's Day aims to shed light on current role models, the well-being and identity of men in our society. Everyone is warmly invited to actively participate in lectures and workshops that deal with topics such as mental health and family life. Special exercise activities, such as Qi Gong for adults and children, are also offered as part of the events. A highlight will be the appearance of Instagramer Patrick van Lier, better known as Feministo_explains, who is very popular with many young people. There are also hands-on stations, a photo box and craft activities for younger visitors. The screenings are rounded off by a film screening by the Wuppertal media project entitled “Be a Boy. Become a Man.”
Hidden challenges and toxic masculinity
Celebrated in more than 70 countries, International Men's Day aims to raise awareness of the challenges men face today. In particular, the topic of toxic masculinity is repeatedly addressed, which addresses destructive behavior patterns and a willingness to use violence. Developing an awareness of sustainable masculinity and responsibility for yourself, others and the environment is of great importance. The Federal Men's Forum adds that...
The products of our masculinity should not be limited by rigid standards. Rather, every man should be able to grow in his personality without having to adapt to traditional roles. The initiative promotes emotional competence and also offers counseling to reduce social pressure caused by traditional images of masculinity. Current voices, such as the men's advisor Björn Süfke on WDR5, illustrate how important it is to establish men's advice as a natural offer.
Celebrate with meaning instead of beer
In contrast to the popular “Men's Day” on Ascension Day, which often focuses on celebrations and the consumption of alcohol, International Men's Day focuses on social issues and understanding the challenges faced by fathers, men and boys. This also makes a comparison to International Women's Day on March 8th clear, which also focuses on equality and the individual identity of women. The focus of both days is on developing respectful and equal relationships.
Anyone interested in the events on November 19th should register in good time by emailing the Equal Opportunities Office.
