New carriage museum at Augustusburg Castle opens its doors!
A new chapter in mobility history is opening in Saxony! On September 26, 2025, the newly designed carriage museum at Augustusburg Castle was opened with a festive ceremony. From September 27th, visitors can explore the impressive museum, which brings to life the cultural history of mobility from the 18th to the 20th century on an area of 1,100 square meters. Under the eyes of the Saxon State Minister of Finance, Christian Piwarz, the invited guests experienced a special day in the historical setting of the castle, which is considered one of the most beautiful Renaissance castles in Europe and is known as the “crown of the Erzgebirge”.
The castle, located east of Chemnitz in the picturesque Ore Mountains, is home to numerous museums, including the motorcycle museum, the castle museum and the castle church, which is decorated with an impressive sacred painting by Lucas Cranach the Younger. The Carriage Museum is now the latest attraction to be inaugurated following extensive renovation and design work at the castle. The exhibition not only shows 25 historic carriages and sleighs, it also tells stories from the past and illustrates how important carriages were back then - similar to how cars serve as status symbols today.
A look into the fascinating exhibition
Visitors can look forward to an exciting journey through eight themed rooms in which the importance of carriages in different areas of life is presented. From courtly carriages to commercial and transport vehicles to chic gala carriages that were used for special occasions - there is something for every taste. A highlight is the gala carriage from 1876, which was used at the silver wedding anniversary of King Albert of Saxony and Carola. But the impressive state car from 1790 is also part of the collection, which was made specifically for the emperor's coronation celebrations.
The carriage simulator provides an interactive experience, allowing visitors to steer a carriage through a digital landscape. In this way, historical travel can be experienced in a vivid way. Guests also have the opportunity to listen to travel reports of carriage rides or even take part in a mini carriage race.
Special exhibits and historical contexts
A special room is dedicated to everyday life and working life in the 19th century. Here, among other things, a postal transport van, bakery van and special carriages for strolls are available for viewing. There is even a place there for a hand-held fire engine from 1802, which was specially designed for the castle. An impressive hearse from this period rounds off the selection of exhibits, which were used until the 1950s. These facets illustrate how carriages also played a central role in middle-class and rural life and made traveling an extraordinary experience.
The reopening of the carriage museum is not only a cultural ray of hope for the region, but also part of a larger concept to promote knowledge and contemporary didactics, as Patrizia Meyn, managing director of the castle operations, emphasizes. Visitors can look forward to an exciting journey through time that documents the important development of mobility in Saxony and beyond.
There is a special surprise for all pocket goers: the admission tickets offer visitors the opportunity to slip into old roles - be it as a coachman, aristocrat or lady-in-waiting. The journey through the past begins for the first time on September 27th.
