School assistants in Chemnitz: Protests have an impact on the budget!
In Chemnitz, the Free State's current budget resolution has brought about fundamental changes in the area of school assistance. In recent days, several schools have protested against the threatened elimination of school assistant positions, which are of great importance to many students and teachers. The protest took place in front of the town hall and was able to mobilize several hundred students and teachers. A central reason for the discontent was the threatened dismissal of the school assistants at the “Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi” learning support center, which is part of a larger group of educationally relevant institutions that are also affected, such as the Free press reported.
During the protests it became clear how serious the situation is in many schools. At the Annaberg-Buchholz support center, for example, students and teachers experienced a silent protest on Monday against the possible loss of three assistant positions. All 222 students and the entire teaching staff actively participated by painting pictures and concerns on the sidewalk and putting up posters. In this way, they demanded the reversal of the decision according to which the contracts of a school assistant, a school administration assistant and an inclusion assistant should not be renewed. The initiative was successful: in just two weeks, students were able to collect almost 10,000 signatures on a petition to prevent the job cuts, followed by reports from the MDR.
The importance of school assistants
The role of school assistants is particularly clear in the current discussion. These specialists not only support teachers in the classroom, but also contribute to better integration and support for students. Your tasks range from implementing educational offerings to teaching language and integration, which is particularly important in heterogeneous classes. The assistants can also act as a bridge between school and parents in order to break down language and cultural barriers, as on the side of Saxon school authorities is explained.
The Saxon Minister of Education, Conrad Clemens, has acknowledged the important role of school assistants, but the provisional budget management makes it difficult to extend fixed-term contracts until the budget is passed in the summer. Of about 900 school assistants, around 400 have contracts until the end of 2025, while the rest are uncertain. Astrid Leonarczyk, the head of the support center, explained that the elimination of these important positions would represent a step backwards for educational equity. Students such as Aallyah, 10, and Simon, 13, highlighted the positive impact that school assistants have on their learning environment and social activities.
The events of the last few days show once again how badly something is wrong. The commitment of the schools and their students is impressive and raises questions about the support of educational institutions and the Free State's necessary funding policy. We can only hope that political decision-makers have insight and do not carelessly jeopardize the importance of school assistance.
