Senior woman in Chemnitz loses thousands of euros to fraudulent competitions!
In tranquil Chemnitz, more precisely in the Schönau district, an unfortunate case of fraud has caused a stir. A senior citizen was the target of a perfidious scam: she was promised a win of several tens of thousands of euros over the phone. But as blick.de reports, the path to supposed happiness was paved by purchasing Apple voucher cards. At the fraudster's instructions, the senior woman had to buy cards worth several thousand euros and pass on the corresponding codes over the phone, which ultimately led to a financial loss.
But this is not an isolated case. The police warn urgently against such activities. “You should be extremely suspicious of requests for money, especially requests for vouchers,” say the authorities’ recommendations. In addition, the police advise not to reveal any personal information over the phone and in particular not to pass on cash codes from voucher cards, as the code alone is enough to redeem the monetary value.
A widespread problem
Unfortunately, the scammers' approach is not an isolated case. According to Apple Support, many people are currently at risk of becoming victims of similar fraud attempts. This is often done using gift cards – especially Apple Gift Cards. The perpetrators often pose as official bodies or claim that urgent payments for bills, taxes or security deposits are due. This scam always requires the purchase of gift cards, the codes of which must then be transmitted over the phone.
These lightning-fast scammers have become even more professional in 2023. According to Pflege-Panorama there is a worrying increase of over 50% in cyber fraud against older people. Seniors are particularly targeted on the Internet, for example through phishing attacks. Constant digitalization and the associated use of online banking make this group of people particularly vulnerable. Many older people often have difficulty acquiring online banking skills, which makes them vulnerable to attempted fraud.
What can you do?
In order to counteract the risks of these frauds, education and vigilance are required. The police recommend that you act immediately if you receive suspicious calls or requests for payment: It is best to hang up immediately and talk to trusted people or the police. This could help prevent similar cases and save other people from losing a financial cushion.
The incidents in Chemnitz should be a warning to everyone. Approach such information carefully and do not believe everything you are told over the phone. Security and common sense are the best protection against such scammers.
