Sweating at over 30 degrees? In Chemnitz and Zwickau there are many refreshing excursion destinations that offer cooling and entertainment at the same time. From shady parks to air-conditioned museums - everyone gets their money's worth here. With the aim of presenting the region as European Capital of Culture in 2025, the summer events are all about art and experiences.
One of the best places to go is the castle park in Lichtenwalde, not far from Chemnitz. With its 335 historic fountains in the baroque garden, the park transforms into a blooming paradise on warm days. Here you can not only enjoy the coolness of the water features, but also admire the fragrant flower circles and the view of the picturesque Zschopautal. The castle also houses a treasury museum with impressive collections including porcelain and furniture. In the months of July and August, visitors can expect a colorful program of events, including park concerts and summer theater. The neighboring village provides the culinary delights. A treat for cinema fans
For film enthusiasts, the summer cinema at the Tuffner Hof in Chemnitz is an absolute highlight. From mid-July to the end of August you can enjoy films here in the open air, accompanied by musical sounds and delicious gastronomy. If you like something more sporty, you will find a great time out in the Küchwaldpark. The park is over 130 years old and offers not only shady areas, but also playgrounds and a cosmonaut center. The 2.3 km long park railway is guaranteed to provide fun for little guests. The botanical garden is also open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Entrance fees are 5 euros for adults and 3 euros for children.
A cultural highlight: castle and rock dome
Rabenstein Castle impresses with its history as the smallest preserved castle in Saxony, which was built in 1170. The Felsendome visitor mine is just five minutes away, where you can marvel at the impressive formations on a 700 meter long, barrier-free path in cool temperatures.
