Dance highlight in Chemnitz: Odyssey in C conquers the city!

A fascinating dance event has transformed the Chemnitz cityscape into a pulsating venue for international dance art. The “Odyssey in C” project, organized by ballet director Sabrina Sadowska, will take place from June 26 to 29, 2025 and will attract not only the local population but also numerous external visitors. There will be 18 stations in the city, where over ten dance companies from six different countries will present their art. The start takes place today and many visitors have been up since tomorrow morning to experience the unique performances.

The event is a homage to great literary works and is based on James Joyce's “Ulysses” and Homer's “Odyssey”. The first station, presented on the picturesque waterfront beach, is by the Jamaican company Cie. L’Acacdco will captivate viewers with her rousing dance style. Another station is in front of the iconic Karl Marx head, where the British company Chameleon is expected to also show excellent dances. The participation of international groups such as Panama Pictures from the Netherlands or the Lithuanian Nuepiko Dance Company guarantees a colorful spectrum of choreographies and dance styles, ranging from acrobatics to contemporary dance.

A unique experience for everyone

What is particularly impressive is that the event is not just intended for dance lovers. The audience has the opportunity to collect stamps at various stations in a special stamp booklet. Anyone who visits at least five stations can expect attractive discounts of five to 25 percent on tickets for upcoming performances at the Chemnitz Opera House. There are also opportunities for deeper insights: interesting discussions take place between dancers and the audience in the foyer of the opera house.

The urban atmosphere becomes all the more lively through performances in everyday, sometimes overlooked places, such as the municipal swimming pool or the publishing house in the city center. It's about integrating dance very close to the audience and creating new, unexpected encounters that strengthen social interaction. As part of the International Festival for Contemporary and Urban Dance, which has the motto “C the Unseen”, the aim is to encourage the audience to participate and open up new perspectives.

An emotional finale

The culmination of the stories performed takes place in the opera house, where the performance of Odysseus and Penelope is performed - a story told from Penelope's perspective. The couple's emotional encounter is awaited with great anticipation. At the premiere of the finale, Sadowska will appear on stage barefoot for the final applause, an image that symbolizes the dancer's connection to art and eventful history.

The Chemnitz Ballet is making an unmistakable statement in the region with this event. In times when art and community experience are becoming increasingly important, the event sends a strong signal for the cultural offerings and vitality of the city of Chemnitz.
