Chemnitz zoo: Flamingo youngsters cheered in the big birthday party!

In the Chemnitz zoo, you can see a joyful sight for animal lovers and visitors: Several flamingo chicks have seen the light of day! The first two chicks already slipped at the beginning of June, followed by another six chicks, the last one on June 14, 2025 saw the light of day. And the joy could be even bigger, because some eggs are still incubated, so that there are still other slip-on successes. This has already been the fourth successful breeding of Flamingos in the zoo since 2022, which makes the zookeepers proud. Flamingos were considered not breedable for a long time, with the first successes in zoological institutions only documented in the 1940s, 50s and 1960s. Rosaflamingos have been kept in the Chemnitz zoo since the mid-1990s and the first breeding successes were achieved after the flaming group was expanded in 2015. The employees of the zoo contributed significantly to this by supporting the animals in building their bowling nests.

This impressive breeding shows the successes in the area of species conservation and breeding of the flamingos, which can be done by both natural brood and by rearing the parents. Blick.de reports that a zoo festival will take place next Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Here visitors can enjoy the various activities around the animals, the zoo and species protection.

Tierpark Chemnitz: A place of relaxation

The Chemnitz zoo was founded in 1964 and now houses over 1300 animal individuals in around 250 species on an area of almost 10 hectares. Visitors can look forward to a quiet and relaxing environment with a variety of attractions, including a unique vivarium with more than 80 types of amphibian in four different tempered rooms as well as exciting animals such as Somali game resin, mountainzebras and tiger. Other highlights include a tropical house with a free flight hall and a petting enclosure that is particularly popular with the small visitors.

joint efforts for species protection

The successful breeding of the flamingos is not only an occasion to joy, but also underlines the importance of zoological facilities in species protection and biodiversity. This became clear during the annual conference of the Association of Zoological Gardens (VDZ), which took place in Berlin from June 18 to 21, 2025. Here, zoo experts from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Spain discussed joint strategies and support from personnel and expertise in species protection projects worldwide. Presseportal emphasizes that VDZ-member zoos attract more than 42 million visitors every year and invest around 11 million euros in over 150 species protection projects.

Jochen Flasbarth, State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of the Environment, referred to the important role of zoo for species protection, while the President of the VDZ, Prof. Dr. Jörg Junhold, focused on the need for financial resources. These efforts are important to preserve and promote biodiversity, a goal that is also recognized in the coalition agreement of the Federal Government.
