Double budget in Saxony: Controversies and agreements in the state parliament!

Big changes are coming in Saxony: The state parliament is planning a double budget for 2025 and 2026, and the debate about it has already caused a lot of excitement. The content of the budget is polarizing the factions, and the Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) has already expressed sharp criticism. Their parliamentary group leader Sabine Zimmermann described the budget as a “patchwork” and criticized the lack of a clear strategy. According to Zimmermann, the municipalities are the big losers, while the responsible coalition of the CDU, SPD, Greens and Left has announced the key budget figures and is dependent on support from the opposition to secure the necessary majority.

The Saxon minority coalition has reached an agreement with the Greens and the Left, reversing some cuts in important areas such as social affairs, culture and climate protection by a total of 250 million euros. As n-tv.de reports, this is not an easy undertaking for the coalition, as ten votes are missing for a majority in the state parliament. Even though initial negotiations with the BSW failed, the Greens and the Left are willing to talk and have incorporated amendments worth 125 million euros each into the government draft.

The path to agreement

The CDU-SPD coalition has decided to rely on a consultation mechanism with opposition factions in which the AfD does not take part. This adds fuel to the debate. Peter Berger, a non-attached MP, summarized the negative attitude towards the budget debate in a clear statement and pointed to the conservative electorate, which could reach two-thirds in the upcoming state elections in 2024.

It will be decided in the coming days whether the budget actually comes to a vote. Sören Voigt, the CDU parliamentary group leader, is optimistic and expects a majority in the final vote on Thursday. The seven Green MPs and five of six Left MPs have already announced their approval, which could have a decisive impact on the political landscape in Saxony. CDU parliamentary group leader Christian Hartmann emphasizes the importance of this agreement as a signal of cohesion.

The impact of the budget

The effects of the budget are already noticeable for many, especially for the municipalities, which, according to the left, are demanding that the federal government cover the entire cost of transferring tasks. At the same time, there is also a desire to have the Tour de France 2030 start in Saxony. As the Süddeutsche reports, the agreement on the draft budget is a novelty in the Free State. The agreed sum of 25 billion euros per year should be achieved without any new debt.

The next few days will be crucial. Will the Saxon state parliament approve the double budget? Or will resistance from the opposition ranks thwart the plans? The only thing that is certain is that the political future in Saxony is in the balance while the factions continue to vie for voters' favor.
