Dresden is planning a mobility transition: focus on the future of rail transport!

In the growing region around Dresden, it is high time to set the course for the future of rail transport. On October 9, 2025, an exciting event took place on the Dresden mobility hub, which dealt with the future of local rail passenger transport (SPNV) in the region. However, the high transport policy expectations, especially in terms of public services and climate protection, are faced with current challenges: Insufficient financial resources can mean a setback in the implementation of ambitious public mobility projects.

High-level speakers and discussions

A look at the program shows that the event was well attended. Keynote speeches by prominent speakers such as Nicole Knapp, Managing Director of Railway Transport at the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV), and Stephan Kühn, Mayor of Dresden, provided exciting insights. There was also a fish bowl discussion session in which Lutz Auerbach and Michael Koch took part, among others - a diverse panel that highlighted the challenges and opportunities of local rail transport in the region.

But it's not just Dresden that is working on the mobility of the future. As part of other projects such as the Augsburg mobility hub, significant investments are also being made in public transport infrastructure. This project, which has been running since 2007, also aims to modernize local transport through various measures, such as the expansion of tram lines. An amount of 214 million euros is estimated, with large parts of the costs being funded by the federal government and the Free State of Bavaria Wikipedia reported.

The state of the infrastructure

According to the current Mobility Monitor 2025, carried out by Allensbach on behalf of acatech, the population has a clear need for better conditions in rail and road transport. 70% of those surveyed rate the condition of the rail network as fairly or very bad. These figures are alarming, as in 2015 only 30% of those surveyed found the situation bad. In addition to the railways, more than half of the population also criticizes the condition of the roads, which underlines the urgency of expansion and renovation work ZDF today points out.

So the signs point to change: with a special fund of 500 billion euros, significant investments in infrastructure could be made in the next ten years. However, traffic experts warn against large-scale new construction projects, which are often considered economically questionable and environmentally harmful. Urgent maintenance of existing bridges and roads must continue to be a priority to avoid costly closures and uncertainty for commuters.
