Alfajores from Argentina: Sweet passion conquers Dresden!
In the vibrant city of Dresden, a new café has taken the hearts of those with a sweet tooth by storm. The founders Bettina Zimmermann and Santiago Gomez have their own factory for the popular Argentinian ones in the Tolkewitz district Alfajores opened. This unique sweet consists of two cookies filled with delicious caramel cream - the so-called dulce de leche - and coated in chocolate. Their journey began in Argentina in 2020 when they met in a village during the pandemic. While Bettina was writing her bachelor's thesis, Santiago was already experimenting with making these sweet delicacies.
Their café “Munay” is not just a place for a quick coffee, but also offers space for a holistic experience. With an area of 100 square meters, it serves as a factory, café and location for workshops and tastings. The decision for the location near Schillerplatz was made despite the original plans for the Neustadt because the rents there were considered too high. The name “Munay” means “love” and stands for a respectful and sustainable lifestyle.
A taste of Argentina in Dresden
The Alfajores are still relatively unknown in Germany, but the couple has already received positive feedback from customers. The range already includes ten different flavors, including raspberry and speculoos. These praline cakes, which have their origins in Moorish-Spanish cuisine, are handmade and made from sustainable raw materials. The chocolate comes from environmentally friendly cultivation projects, while the ingredients are largely sourced from regional suppliers, such as honey from Blasewitz and edible flowers from Leipzig.
For anyone who is curious about creative combinations, Bettina and Santi have customizable options on offer: from different toppings to individual packaging, everything is possible. There is also a special focus on environmentally friendly packaging that is compostable. “It is important to us that our products are not only delicious, but also produced sustainably,” explains Bettina.
Cultural events and community
In the future, the founders plan to host Argentinian evenings in their café. In addition to live music, there will also be empanadas to bring the diverse Argentine culture closer to a wider audience. Opening hours are Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. In addition, they will be present on various holidays and events, such as the Loschwitz Christmas market until December 15, 2024 and the Striezelmarkt the following week.
Alfajores have a long tradition not only in Argentina, where around 70 of these delicacies are consumed every second, but also in other countries such as Spain and the Orient. The origin of the sweet is diverse and exciting and goes back to Arabic roots. Over the centuries they have developed in different regions and have now become an integral part of Argentine food culture. In Dresden, these works of art from the bakery are given a very special place by Munay now.
The next chance to try the products will be in mid-January 2024 with the opening of our own shop at Tolkewitzer Straße 6. Chocolate tastings and workshops are offered there that promise unforgettable taste experiences. It remains exciting to see how Munay Alfajores will develop in the Dresden food scene - one thing is certain: snacking here is not only fun, but also meaningful.
