Construction work at Postplatz: tram line is changing!

From Monday, June 30th, the construction site around Postplatz in Dresden will open. Work to replace the badly worn tracks at one of the city's central intersections is scheduled to be completed by July 21. After more than 20 years of intensive use, the tracks are in a condition that requires urgent repairs, as MDR reports. This construction work falls during the summer holidays, when the majority of the city switches to a holiday schedule.

The repair is not only necessary, but also sensible: the daily number of passengers at Postplatz has increased from 30,000 to 43,000, which corresponds to an increase of 43%. Eight out of twelve tram lines use this junction, which has become particularly important after the removal of the Carola Bridge, according to the Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe DVB.

Changes in tram traffic

In order to make the construction work possible, extensive diversions in tram traffic are necessary. The following changes can be expected:

Bus transport and further information

There are also changes in bus transport. This eliminates the Postplatz stop for themBus route 62, which will offer additional trips to relieve traffic at night. But don't worry, the stops in front of the Zwinger and the terminus in the Webergasse track loop remain accessible. The city center can still be reached via alternative stops such as Webergasse, Zwinger and Pirnaischer Platz.

The Altmarkt and Schwimmhalle Freiberger Platz stops are no longer accessible during construction work. Pedestrians also have to walk 500 meters between the Postplatz (Zwinger) and Webergasse stops.

Construction progress and costs

The construction work takes place in multiple shifts and sometimes on weekends. The renewal of the track crossing, which has already been installed on a trial basis in the track construction workshop in Reick, has an impressive weight of 60 tons and a length of 675 meters. The entire renovation will cost approximately 1.9 million euros, of which one million euros is being sought through funding from the federal government and the state of Saxony. The streets must be closed to car traffic during this time, but the underground car park on Wilsdruffer Straße remains accessible.

The initial work on Postplatz shows that consideration is not only given to the present, but also to the city's future transport infrastructure. With a well-planned process, it is hoped to minimize inconvenience for residents and passengers during the renovation. It is to be hoped that once the work is completed we will benefit from smoother and more effective public transport.
