Construction work between Leipzig and Dresden: Train traffic severely restricted!
Travelers between Leipzig and Dresden have to prepare for some changes in rail traffic. From June 23rd at 9 p.m. until June 29th at 5 p.m. the route between Dornreichenbach and Dahlen will be completely closed. Deutsche Bahn reports this on its official website deutschebahn.com. The reason for the closure is necessary renovation work on the route.
During this time, the S 3 trains between Borsdorf, Wurzen and Oschatz will be canceled. The RE 50 line is also affected and will be replaced by a replacement bus service between Wurzen and Oschatz. Travelers should at least provide information on digital information media, such as bahn.de or the DB Navigator app.
Replacement traffic and diversions
There are also noticeable changes in long-distance transport: the ICE line Wiesbaden-Dresden will only end in Leipzig, which is why stops in Riesa, Dresden-Neustadt and Dresden main station will be canceled. Replacement buses (IC buses) are available between Leipzig and Dresden for this route. In addition, travelers must expect travel time extensions of up to 90 minutes as some trains will be rerouted and will not stop in Riesa.
From June 27th, the ICE between Erfurt and Leipzig will also be rerouted, with travel time extensions of up to one hour possible. A diversion is also planned for the Hanover-Dresden IC line: The trains run every two hours between Leipzig and Dresden and stop in Elsterwerda, while the stop in Riesa is no longer necessary. Here too, this means an increase in travel time of 30 to 60 minutes.
Longer construction work and further restrictions
It's not just tight for travelers between Dresden and Leipzig in the coming days: In principle, there have been restrictions since November 6th, 2023 due to new construction phases between Zeithain and Leckwitz, which will last until June 6th, 2025. This one from MDR reported, also include diversions, changed timetables and extensive replacement traffic.
Monday to Friday, the RE50 regional express trains are affected, which run from Dresden-Neustadt to Riesa between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. without stopping. There are no stops in Koswig, Weinböhla and Niederau; instead, replacement buses are used, especially to ensure connections to Großenhain.
The construction work is necessary to remove sheet piling between the tracks and to modernize the route for the future. The new crossing structure at Dresden main station and the Riesa junction will also be further developed to make the railway more attractive for travelers in the region.
To avoid being misled, passengers should inquire in advance, not just on bahn.de but also in the immediate vicinity of their travel destinations, for example via notices in the train stations. Passengers are asked to be prepared for the construction work and diversions to take some time.
