Dresden Higher than ever: Town Hall tower open again after 12 years!
The Dresden City Hall has reason to be happy! After twelve long years of waiting, the viewing platform of Dresden City Hall has finally been open to visitors again since July 1, 2023. The closure was necessary because there was a lack of a second escape route, which is required by regulations for access to high-altitude rooms. The city has now cleverly solved this problem in collaboration with the fire department and the building inspectorate dresdner-stadtteilzeitungen.de reported.
It is now possible to climb to the viewing platform at a height of 68 meters, with groups of a maximum of five people accompanied by a tour guide. The time slots must be booked in advance and can be done on Sunday, Monday, Thursday and Friday at 3, 4 and 5 p.m. The starting point for the adventure is in the foyer of the Golden Gate at Rathausplatz 1.
The climb and the view
How does the whole thing work? After visitors take the elevator to the fourth floor, they still have to climb 270 steps in a narrow stairwell. That sounds like a challenge, but the climb only takes about ten minutes! Once at the top, visitors can spend around 30 minutes in a rustic atmosphere and enjoy the magnificent view over the city. The platform offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the historic old town of Dresden, the Frauenkirche, the Zwinger and many other highlights, such as dresden.tours supplemented.
The small photo exhibition of historical photos that brings the history of the town hall tower and the city to life is particularly exciting. You can even see the Dresden peregrine falcons nesting in the tower dome. Clear snapshots and souvenir photos are guaranteed due to the picturesque view!
Visitor conditions and information
A few important details before you set off: The climb is not recommended for people with certain health restrictions. People with a fear of heights, restricted mobility or respiratory problems should avoid visiting. Visitors must also sign a declaration before attempting the climb.
Tickets cost 9 euros for adults and 6 euros for schoolchildren, students, trainees and holders of the Dresden Pass. A look at the prices shows that the entry costs were significantly lower before the closure, as they were 3 euros for adults at the time. Booking options are available on the city's website or by calling 0351 50150234.
The joy of the reopening will initially last until the end of October 2025, when test operations will take place. This new concept proves to be a great way to re-explore Dresden from above, offering both locals and tourists fresh perspectives on this beautiful city.
