Dresden in turmoil: Prayer for peace against right-wing agitation after an attack

On Tuesday evening the mood in Dresden-Leuben boiled over. Around 350 people gathered for a demonstration by the right-wing extremist party “Free Saxony”, which loudly called for the rapid deportation of criminal foreigners. Over 65 counter-demonstrators were also there to take a stand against this right-wing propaganda. The congregation of the Church of the Ascension had called for a peace prayer that was intended to provide a counterpoint in the midst of the tense situation. These events did not take place without a background: a brutal attack at a tram stop at the weekend caused tempers to run high.

In the incident, two 18-year-olds were injured with beer bottles, which further inflamed the situation and underlined the demands of the demonstrators. Two men with Tunisian citizenship were soon identified as suspects and were taken into custody. Interestingly, during the arrest, the police also found a music box that belonged to the injured youth. The investigation into assault and theft is ongoing, further inflaming the already tense atmosphere. MDR reports a dramatic deterioration in the situation.

Right-wing extremism in focus

This demonstration is just one example of a worrying trend in Germany. According to that Protection of the Constitution The potential of violent right-wing extremists has increased in recent years and now includes around 15,300 people. Overall, the right-wing extremist potential will rise to 50,250 in 2024, which represents an increase of 9,650 people compared to the previous year. Such values raise worrying questions about social development.

The figures for right-wing extremist crimes are just as alarming. 37,835 such crimes were recorded in 2024, an increase of 47.4% compared to the previous year. Of particular concern are assault crimes with a xenophobic background, which rose by 4.8% to 916 cases. These developments shed light on the ongoing challenges society faces in dealing with xenophobia and violence.

Connections and tendencies

Over a period of ten years, from 2014 to 2024, there is a worrying trend towards an increase in politically motivated crimes. The latest data from the Statista show not only the numbers, but also the explosive climate that results from these incidents. It is striking that the right-wing extremist scene reacted to Islamist-motivated acts of violence in cities such as Mannheim and Solingen, which led to mobilization in many cities including Dresden.

Recent developments make it clear that there are a lot of challenges that need to be overcome in our society. The question remains how we as a community can react to such events and at the same time set an example for peace and cohesion. The coming days and weeks are likely to be decisive in determining how the situation will develop.
