Dresden's International School: Now it's really getting started!

A lot is happening in Dresden! The Dresden International School (DIS) is changing leadership while preparing for strong student growth. James Brightman, who has been the new director since August 2023, not only brings a breath of fresh air, but also a colorful mix of international experience. Originally from Indianapolis, USA, he has worked for over 25 years in countries such as South Korea, Austria and Ethiopia.

The DIS currently has 430 students with a promising expectation of 90 to 100 new classmates within the next two years. This is mainly thanks to the establishment of the chip manufacturer ESMC, which wants to strengthen the region this year with an investment of ten billion euros in a new factory in the north of Dresden. And that's not all: ESMC is expected to attract up to 2,000 skilled workers to the city, which will create additional demand for school places.

School offerings and new buildings

The city and the Free State of Saxony have already sought discussions with the DIS and asked the school to provide places for the ESMC families. A new part of the building is being planned for this purpose and is due to be completed by 2027. Starting this school year, Mandarin will also be taught at DIS - an exciting addition for students who want to acquire global skills.

Brightman's goal is to lead the school into a new phase of growth. His experience in integrating new students will be a great advantage. He particularly wants to actively integrate Asian students into the classroom communities. Even though he hasn't planned his own lessons yet, he knows that supporting the community is a priority.

International schools in Germany

All of this is happening against the backdrop of a growing market for international schools in Germany. Loud deutschland.de These schools are a popular choice for expat families, who often follow their home country's curriculum. Most international schools offer education in English or bilingually, and the aim is for students to graduate with the International Baccalaureate (IB), making it easier to gain access to universities worldwide.

There are now 83 schools in Germany that offer IB programs - a number that is increasing. These schools are characterized by small classes and international teachers, although the school fees are not to be sneezed at. However, many institutions offer scholarships that vary depending on the parents' income.

The Dresden International School is at an exciting crossroads, with James Brightman at the helm, not only acting as director, but also as an ambassador for future-oriented, international education in Dresden. In his free time he discovers the world with his sons - they recently went on a joint expedition to Kilimanjaro.
