Arrests in Dresden: Cable thieves and arrest warrants at the weekend!
Last week there were several arrests in different parts of Germany and arrest warrants were executed. Overall, the incidents are characterized by a focus on property crimes and drug crimes, which could affect the population's sense of security.
As the L-IZ Reportedly, the Dresden Federal Police Inspectorate arrested a 39-year-old Polish citizen and a 40-year-old Czech citizen last weekend. The Pole was caught red-handed stealing cables on Friday June 13th and was fined €4,470 - a fine he has not paid. This led to a substitute prison sentence of 149 days in the Dresden correctional facility.
The Czech was also checked in the domed hall of Dresden Central Station. Here it turned out that there was also an arrest warrant against him for violating the weapons law after he had been sentenced to a fine of 500 euros or 10 days in prison. He also failed to pay the fine and was accordingly taken into custody.
Checks at Halle main station
On June 5th, a few days earlier, a similar case occurred at Halle (Saale) main station. According to the report by You are Halle the federal police checked a 36-year-old German. During the check it turned out that there were two executive arrest warrants against him from the Stendal public prosecutor's office. These resulted from convictions for unlawful possession of narcotics as well as theft and insults. Since he could not raise the required 3,030 euros, he was also transferred to a correctional facility.
Crime in Germany in focus
These incidents are in the context of an overall decreased crime rate in Germany. The Statista has found that the Police Crime Statistics (PKS) 2024 shows a decrease in recorded crimes of 1.7%, indicating around 5.84 million cases. However, there are areas of increasing discomfort. The increase in crimes that affect people's sense of security continues to be observed, while property crimes such as thefts are increasingly appearing in the statistics.
Especially in cities like Cologne, where the crime figures were among the highest in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2023, it is clear that despite a downward trend in some areas, concerns about security and order remain. In such an environment, the people arrested are - at least from the perspective of law enforcement - a sign of the ongoing efforts to combat crime and hopefully prevent further crimes through controls.
