No more postal services in Dresden's Postbank branch on Antonsplatz!
There's a lot going on in Dresden at the Postbank branch at Antonsplatz 1. What's going on there? As saechsische.de reports, three out of four counters are currently available, but customers have to be prepared for long queues. Over 20 people want to clarify questions about their accounts or are looking for special stamps. However, everything will change from July 3rd, as postal services will no longer be offered. In concrete terms, this means that in the future the branch will only forego the typical advice offers.
Another problem has recently become apparent: the ATMs in the lobby have broken down, which further increases waiting times. If you want to withdraw money in the future, you must be prepared that the ATMs will only be accessible during counter opening hours. This is done for security reasons and to prevent vandalism. The stamp machine that attracted many customers has already been dismantled.
New postal locations
Where should the people of Dresden do their postal business now? The answer to that is simple: The nearest post office is at Webergasse 1 in the Altmarktgalerie. This branch, which extends over Douglas on the first floor, has already prepared for the rush with two service counters. As paketda adds, Deutsche Post is on a clear path to separation from Postbank. This is not only the case in Dresden, but extends throughout Germany. Postbank is reducing its branch network from 550 to 300 locations. Around 250 branches are expected to close or be converted by 2026. Around 100 of these remaining branches will no longer offer postal services in the future.
The trend is clearly towards mobile banking. A study shows that Germans are increasingly using banking apps, which is also resulting in a decline in the use of branches. According to Postbank, 38% of those surveyed use online portals for their banking transactions. The younger generations aged 18 to 39 in particular often opt for mobile applications - 45% of them conveniently do their banking via the app.
The impact on customers
The shift to digital offerings is becoming a challenge for many Postbank customers. Around 31% of these customers are over 60 years old and are having difficulties with the changes. The current developments could mean financial losses for the partner branches, so that both citizens and mayors repeatedly complain about the closures. Postbank's last stronghold in Dresden could now have to change its operations from July 3rd. Finally, it remains to be hoped that the new postal locations can cope with the influx of customers and provide a sufficient supply. After the Postbank services have been discontinued, it remains to be seen what will happen to other postal businesses in the city.
