New chapter for Dresden: What will the Carola Bridge really be like?
There are crucial days ahead in Dresden: the demolition work on the Carola Bridge is in full swing, and the city council will decide on the new construction of the bridge on Thursday, June 19th. The building committee will deal with the issue on Monday. The aim is to create a clear perspective for reconstruction before the summer break. But what should this new bridge look like?
Opinions on this project are divided and range from nostalgic wishes to practical considerations. One proposal calls for rebuilding the bridge based on the historic model of the Queen Carola Bridge, which was built in 1895 and destroyed during World War II. The advantage of this variant lies in its aesthetics and better integration into the old town, as well as its static stability and longevity. However, the planning approval process could take up to six years, meaning approval is questionable given today's shipping requirements. As the Saxon reported, it is unlikely that this proposal will pass.
Alternative suggestions
Another proposal put forward by the PVP political group envisages an open ideas competition in which citizens can actively participate. This idea could lead to a more modern and needs-based bridge, but delays in the planning process must also be accepted here. The chances of this proposal being accepted are also rather slim, as the PVP only has four seats on the city council.
The city administration has a more pragmatic approach: a replacement building that is based on the existing structure and should offer 2-3 lanes. The goal here is rapid implementation without lengthy approval processes. Partial commissioning could be possible by autumn 2029. Despite these advantages, there are critical voices calling for four lanes.
Another idea comes from the SPD: They propose a three-lane bridge that should be no wider than the old one. This variant could be cheaper and better integrated into the cityscape, but carries the risk of being inadequate as traffic volumes increase. The chances of acceptance are also rather low here.
The CDU, Team Zastrow and the FDP, on the other hand, are relying on a four-lane solution with separate lanes for trams, pedestrians and cyclists. This option promises space for all road users, but has critics who warn of higher costs and the possible rejection of funding. However, this is where the proposal is most likely to pass, as these groups only hold 23 of the 70 votes in the city council.
Historical backgrounds
The Carola Bridge looks back on an eventful history. Built between 1892 and 1895 by the architects H. Klette and K. Manck, it was the largest prestressed concrete bridge in the GDR with a total length of 500 meters. After war damage, it was rebuilt between 1967 and 1971. The magnificent equestrian sculptures by Friedrich Offermann on the Old Town bridgehead have been preserved as beautiful contemporary witnesses of the bridge. But the collapse of bridge C on September 11, 2024 was also tragic, which highlighted the need for a comprehensive new construction.
The pressure on the city to find a quick and workable solution could influence future decisions. The Dresden economy demands a pragmatic and functional approach in order to avoid lengthy discussions about the design. The preliminary decision on the construction project on Monday will therefore be particularly important, followed by the final vote in the city council on Thursday. The future of the Carola Bridge remains uncertain until then.
