Commuter horror: Construction work between Leipzig and Dresden extends waiting times!
On Wednesday morning, the train platform in Leipzig was filled with commuters, students and a happy group of children who wanted to make their way to Dresden. But instead of a relaxing journey, they faced delays and diversions. This is due to the intensive construction work to replace switches on the route between Leipzig and Dresden, which is being carried out by Deutsche Bahn (DB). Passengers have to prepare for alternative services, longer waiting times and diversions. The Intercity (IC) will be rerouted via Elsterwerda, which means there will be no stop in Riesa. An express bus was set up for ICE connections that runs every two hours - and at the same price as a long-distance ticket. In addition, the travel time with the RE50 is now an impressive 2 hours and 13 minutes, which is over an hour longer than usual.
However, the challenges are not just limited to the route to Dresden. Current information shows that the RE5 and RE50 between Neustrelitz and Waren (Müritz) will also be closed from July for the construction of a bridge. The necessary work is necessary due to damage to the bridge, which was built in 1972. These requirements will also cause problems for passengers from July 1st to 31st, as a replacement bus service will be set up between Neustrelitz Hbf and Waren (Müritz).
Fluctuations in driving comfort
In Wurzen, many passengers were waiting for the replacement rail service. At the beginning there was only one bus on site, which caused unrest. Due to constructive criticism from the passenger representative Pro Bahn, the DB increased the number of articulated buses from five to seven in order to cope with the rush. But the bus journey through Saxony is less comfortable than the regional train and is not always pleasant when temperatures are high and braking abruptly. The planning shows that the bus trip from Oschatz to Wurzen takes 39 minutes, but passengers are offered a beautiful view of the Saxon landscape.
While the construction work between Wurzen and Oschatz is planned, the return journey to Leipzig is running smoothly throughout. The trains are well filled, but there are enough seats. DB employees are on site and will help travelers with any questions. At the latest after the work, the processes at the replacement stops should function smoothly, although the additional travel time of around 30 minutes should not be neglected.
Long-term improvements in the rail network
The construction work on the tracks is part of a large-scale renovation program by Deutsche Bahn, which affects many important railway lines in Germany. From August 2025, the Berlin – Hamburg route will undergo general renovation, which is one of the most used connections in the country, with around 230 trains daily. The renovation work will focus on improving tracks, switches and overhead lines, along with upgrading 28 transit stations. The goal is clear: a long-term increase in performance and greater reliability for travelers.
During the construction period, passengers should always focus on the current information from Deutsche Bahn. DB provides comprehensive information for questions about passenger rights, especially in the event of delays. Passengers are entitled to refunds of up to 100 percent of their ticket prices in the event of major delays or trip cancellations.
Overall, it remains to be seen how this work will affect future travel experiences. However, DB's efforts are a step in the right direction for a modern and efficient rail network.
