Saxony honors six personalities with a constitutional medal in Dresden!
In a solemn ceremony on Saturday in Dresden, six outstanding personalities from Saxony were awarded the Saxon Constitutional Medal. This honor, which was given by the President of the State Parliament Alexander Dierks, recognizes commitment in many areas, be it culture, medicine, society or sport. The award winners include, among others, the Heidenau entrepreneur Uwe Saegeling and the general director of the Chemnitz Municipal Theater, Dr. Christoph Dittrich. The medal commemorates the Peaceful Revolution of 1989 and is awarded annually to citizens who have made outstanding contributions to the democratic development of the Free State of Saxony. By 2025, a total of 204 people will have received this award, which was established in 1997, just five years after the adoption of the Saxon Constitution.
Among those honored is Uwe Saegeling, who is known not only as an entrepreneur but also as president of the HC Elbflorenz handball club. His special commitment to sport and his social initiatives made him a role model in the region. Also Dr. Christoph Dittrich, who has a significant influence on cultural life in Chemnitz, received this recognition for his achievements in cultural education and his support of the Chemnitz Capital of Culture 2025.
Diversity of award winners
Other honored personalities include Annegret Haas from Chemnitz, who was honored for her social projects in the city, and the general practitioner Dr. Gottfried Hanzl from Oderwitz, who has made outstanding contributions to medical care in rural areas and innovative telemedicine projects. Heidrun Hiemer, the former mayor of Schwarzenberg, was also honored, but her honor for local political work will follow in August. Oliver Zille, the long-time director of the Leipzig Book Fair, received the medal for his services to literature and culture.
The Saxon Constitutional Medal is an important award that is very popular in the Free State of Saxony alongside the Saxon Order of Merit. It is awarded for achievements in a wide variety of social areas, which once again shows the diversity of the award winners. The back of the medal is adorned with the phrase “We are the people,” reminiscent of the civil movements of the time, and the five burning candles that symbolize solidarity and hope.
The award ceremony took place in the Ständehaus in Dresden - an important location for such honors. It is important to make such achievements visible and to recognize all those who contribute to the social and cultural prosperity of the Free State. This shows how diverse and committed the people in Saxony are, who often achieve great things in silence.
