Closure of the diving hall: safety risks when diving!
There is sobering news in the latest developments surrounding diving in Dresden. The municipal Dresdner Bäder GmbH has closed the diving hall of the Freiberger Straße swimming complex with immediate effect. The background to this drastic decision are serious doubts about the resilience of the roof structure. These concerns arose during preparations for a regular survey to evaluate the condition of the suspended structure. How MDR reports, it was discovered that the prestressed concrete trusses of the roof structure contain materials that were also used in the Carola Bridge, which has now partially collapsed.
These alarming findings have a far-reaching impact on water sports in the region: the German C-Youth Diving Championships had to be canceled prematurely. For the athletes it was a bitter turn of events that they had not expected. Experts fear that rust on the tendons and structural weaknesses in the roof trusses could seriously endanger the safety of the hall. Bäder GmbH therefore no longer sees any possibility of guaranteeing continued operation as safe.
Safety in focus
The city administration then immediately enforced the closure in collaboration with Dresden's sports mayor Jan Donhauser (CDU). It is almost ironic that the structural engineering office commissioned to review the construction documents recommended a quick examination of the roof trusses. This can be compared well with the comprehensive testing services provided by TÜV, which regularly evaluate the stability of various structures, such as leisure and sports facilities. Loud TÜV Comprehensive safety tests are important to ensure the traffic safety and durability of structures.
However, the hall closure does not affect the renovated swimming pool of the sports complex or the one that was newly built in 2016, which can remain in operation. However, it remains to be seen how long the jumping hall will remain closed and what measures will ultimately be taken to resolve the static problems.
A look into the future
A consultation with representatives of the Federal Water Jumping Base is scheduled for the next few days to discuss how to proceed. It remains to be hoped that a solution to the static challenges will be found quickly, because for the many athletes and their families, the jumping hall is not only a place for competition, but also an important part of their sporting life. The Riva Group, whose products such as the Hennigsdorf prestressing steel used are under close scrutiny, is also aware of the smooth functionality of its materials, which it guarantees through careful technical standards Riva Steel emphasized.
We can only hope that the hall closure doesn't last too long and that the sports landscape in Dresden will soon be enlivened again by the rushing water and the athletes' jumps.
