Danger of traffic jams on D8: Tunnel renovation between Dresden and Prague!

The D8/E55 motorway, which runs from Dresden to Prague, will be extensively renovated from October 2, 2023 to October 8, 2025. Drivers have to be prepared for traffic jams and longer journey times during this time, as the Panenská and Libouchec tunnels will be closed to traffic in sections. The tunnel renovation is necessary to increase traffic safety and improve the infrastructure. The Panenská Tunnel, which at 2168 meters is the longest motorway tunnel in the Czech Republic, will offer an increased speed limit of 100 km/h instead of the current 80 km/h after construction work, as ADAC reports.

During the first full closure in April 2025, foreign truck drivers pointed out difficulties with the diversion routes, which often lead over narrow and confusing roads in the Ore Mountains. The Czech police have deployed around 140 officers to regulate traffic on site and are appealing to road users to be patient in the diversions and to create emergency lanes if necessary, reports Die Zeit.

Traffic jams and detours

The construction work also includes extensive renovations of emergency walkways, drainage systems and fire doors. The tunnels are to be prepared for the future at a cost of around 30 million euros. During the construction period, traffic will be routed through one tube of each tunnel, which means that restrictions are to be expected. Several full closures are planned over the next few months, including one in early July and another in October.

The surrounding diversion routes are clearly signposted, both for cars and trucks. Drivers should either take the B170 Zinnwald-Georgenfeld or Altenberg or take the Bahratal and Bad Gottleuba-Berggiesshübel in the direction of Ústí nad Labem. Anyone coming from Bad Schandau can continue towards Prague via Hrensko and Decin.

Modernization and tolls

The Czech motorway network is considered modern and well-developed, although use is subject to a toll. This toll differs depending on the size and type of vehicle. The D8 motorways and other sections require an electronic vignette or a special truck toll when used, as Czech Tourist informs. Some sections will be toll-free from 2025, which is an advantage for users of cars under 3.5 tonnes.

The current traffic conditions and information about construction sites on the D8 can be accessed via the motorway company. When planning trips to this region, it is advisable to find out about the diversions and possible disruptions in advance to avoid unnecessary delays.
