There is a depressed mood in Dresden because the traditional location of Volkswagen's Transparent Factory is facing significant upheaval. At the end of 2023, production of the ID.3 electric model will cease and the future of the factory site remains uncertain. News38 reports that VW is already in discussions with the Technical University of Dresden and the Free State of Saxony to examine joint use of the site. A new research campus could be built from 2026, giving the location a new perspective.
The Transparent Factory was launched in 2001 as a prestige project and has played an important role in VW's history ever since. It is the group's smallest and youngest location, whose roots go back to 1945, when series production of the Volkswagen sedan began, as in Volkswagen Newsroom can be read.
