Insights and encounters: Open day at the Chemnitz JVA!

On November 9, 2025, the Chemnitz Correctional Facility opened its doors to all interested citizens. The occasion? An open day that not only provided a look behind the walls of the central women's prison for Saxony and Thuringia, but was also part of the Capital of Culture program. Visitors were able to discover detention rooms, workplaces and therapies for female prisoners and get an idea of life in the institution, which was built in 1969 as a prefabricated building.

The Chemnitz JVA offers space for a total of 256 women in the closed prison and 75 in the open prison. The outdoor area with its ball sports fields and gardens also invites you to take part in sporting activities and relax. Those responsible for the facility wanted to use this event to create transparency and reduce prejudices. The lively participation shows that there is great interest in the living conditions and offers within the prison.

Insights and encounters

Visitors had the opportunity not only to view the premises, but also to have direct conversations with the prison staff. The exchange revealed many interesting perspectives. For example, some of the women housed there were able to talk about their experiences, giving the audience a genuine impression of the conditions and life inside the prison.

The offer was aimed at anyone who wanted to find out more about working with and for female prisoners. Especially in recent years, society has become increasingly interested in topics such as rehabilitation and social inclusion. Events like these make an important contribution to raising awareness of the challenges and opportunities within the justice system.

Background on the correctional facility

The Chemnitz Correctional Facility is not only a place of detention, but also a place for education and rehabilitation. Similar to other facilities, there is a wide range of therapies and workplaces aimed at supporting the inmates. Attempts are being made to reduce the recidivism rate through various programs and to offer the women a perspective when they leave the institution.

Events such as open days are crucial to bridging the gap between the prison system and society and promoting acceptance of rehabilitation measures. One could say that this opportunity is a real win for many involved. Perhaps it is also good that the Chemnitz JVA has its place in the heart of Saxony and is therefore taking a step towards social change.

At a time when the topic of prisons is increasingly coming into focus, it is to be hoped that such events will take place regularly and that more people will have the opportunity to find out about the real conditions in prisons.
